─ says PNCR will support families of murdered men
Kaieteur News- Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton said from all indications, it would appear that the police officers who placed 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters in the bus after he was shot last week wanted him to die; a move he cannot comprehend.
The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) leader visited the homes of Peters and fellow Lindener Keon Fogenay on Monday to offer support to the families. The two men were shot hours apart last week in the mining town. Peters, a father of one, was killed last Monday evening by police sergeant Michael Kendall, who said that the young man was wanted for rape. Kendall had claimed that in an attempt to arrest Peters, his firearm went off. However, surveillance footage which showed him running behind Peters with a gun, counteracted the police’s claim. Shortly after, the police officer was seen fetching the injured man by his clothes.
The shooting death evoked a massive protest in the township on Tuesday, where 32-year-old Fogenay, a bystander, was shot in the eye and killed by another police rank.
During a telephone interview on Monday with the Kaieteur News, Norton said he spoke with residents in the area who shared details of what took place after Peters was shot last Monday evening.
“One of the things I found very interesting today is that I was told that after the boy (Ronaldo Peters) was shot, the police took the boy and carry him to the home of some girl they alleged he raped, and then before they carry him to the hospital. So, it became clear to me that… if you know you shoot a man, you put he in a vehicle and you carrying he to verify that this is the person, before you carry he to the hospital. They were intent on him dying… I got that out of the people in the area there today, and I found that interesting, because I didn’t see the (need),” he told this publication.
While he preferred not to delve too deeply into details of the discussions, he said he is aware of one event which one of the families has planned and that the PNC/R will participate. However, he preferred the family, rather than himself or his party members, to provide updates on the events being planned, lest persons suggest it is for political gain.
Norton was accompanied by Regional Chairman, Deron Adams and His Worship, Deputy Mayor Dominique Blair.
The families of the two men have already been bolstered with legal support from attorney-at-law Dr. Dexter Todd and have begun submitting statements to investigators of the Regional Security System (RSS).
On Sunday, Todd held talks with Linden Mayor, Sharma Solomon, before he met with the relatives of the men who were killed: Ronaldo Peters and Keon Fogenay. In a statement, Solomon said Dr. Todd met with some family members and witnesses of the shooting of both men.
