Kaieteur News- A 30-year-old woman died by drowning Friday morning, after the boat she was traveling in capsized near De Veldt Village, leaving her trapped underwater.
The woman has been identified as Kayandra Lindie.
The mother of two, along with her five-year-old son was reportedly on their way back to her home in East Canje, Berbice, to prepare for work after visiting one of her brothers in the Berbice River when tragedy struck.
In an interview with Kaieteur News, Kesseon Lindie, the deceased woman’s older brother, explained that the boat she was in reportedly struck a submerged log, causing it to overturn and quickly took in water. Amid the chaos, Lindie who was the last person in the boat became trapped inside.
“She was the last person in the boat and she push out the boy (the son) out of the window, but she didn’t make it to come out,” the older Lindie told Kaieteur News.
The five-year-old boy reportedly told relatives that his mother told him, “You can’t die with me,” as she pushed him out of the boat.
The boat incident involved 32-year-old Aldwayne Denhart, the boat captain and five other passengers.
The boat captain reportedly told police that he departed Sand Hills Village en route to New Amsterdam with five adults and two children aboard.
“While navigating near De Veldt Village, DenHart reported feeling an impact near the engine, after which he lost control of the vessel, causing it to capsize,” police said in its report.
Nearby residents rendered assistance and were able to rescue the passengers. However, Lindie was found unresponsive. Emergency services transported Lindie, along with three others, to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The other three passengers remain under observation in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department.
Meanwhile, Lindie’s brother described her to be, “a straight up person. I know she loves her children; she is all for her children them. She worked hard to maintain her children.”
Another relative also said, “She had a contagious laugh and a knack for telling funny stories, she brought joy to everyone around. Always organising fun activities and finding happiness in the little things. She’s always there for everyone during the hard times.”
