GFF-Blue Water Shipping National U15 Secondary School Girl’s Football C/ship officially launched
-Tournament to see massive increase in participation
Kaieteur Sports- Blue Water Shipping has once again joined forces with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) yesterday to bring the much-anticipated 2025 National Under-15 Secondary School Football Championship to life. Building on the momentum of last year’s landmark event, this year’s tournament is set to kick off on May 3, promising to be even bigger and better.

This year’s edition signals a major leap forward in the development of girls’ football in Guyana, with a 52 percent increase in team participation. In 2024, the tournament featured 54 secondary school teams. This year, the number is to increase to an impressive 91 schools with 66 schools already confirmed their participation, underlining the rising interest and investment in the girls’ game.
The championship, an extension of the global Football for Schools (G4F) initiative, is designed to bridge the competitive gap at the youth level, especially for girls by fostering school-based football. While local clubs continue to grapple with infrastructural challenges that hinder youth development, the GFF has taken strategic steps to address those issues through initiatives like this one.
Speaking at the official launch, GFF President Wayne Forde emphasized the Federation’s dedication to football’s grassroots development. “This is quite an investment, having to provide logistics for both Hinterland and Coastal teams, but the investment is indicative of our commitment to the growth and development of the sport,” Forde stated.
Forde also lauded the Ministry of Education, led by Minister Priya Manickchand, for its crucial support in making the tournament a reality. He extended special thanks to Blue Water Shipping, whose continued partnership has been instrumental in the tournament’s success.

The 2025 tournament will span multiple venues across the country, including several regions outside Georgetown. However, the quarterfinals through to the finals will be hosted in the capital (venues to be determined), ensuring broader public access and visibility. Meanwhile, in a landmark move, three teams from the Mabaruma district will also be making their debut, representing a significant step in national inclusivity.
Blue Water Shipping’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Development, Richard DeNobrega, spoke passionately at the launch, calling the young athletes “future champions and future international stars.”
“The value that this competition brings is exactly what Blue Water Shipping stands for. We are super happy, super excited, and super committed to this initiative once again,” DeNobrega said. “We look forward to more fun, more goals, and more talent being added to the national girls’ football pool.”
The impact of last year’s tournament was evident, as it directly contributed to the selection of Guyana’s national U-15 team, which went on to deliver a commendable performance at the CONCACAF U-15 Championship.
As anticipation builds for the May 3 kickoff, stakeholders remain optimistic that the 2025 edition will not only elevate the standard of school football but also provide a critical platform for unearthing the next generation of female football stars in Guyana.
