Kaieteur Sports- In a historic occurrence for Guyana’s Basketball fraternity the ‘One Guyana’ 3×3 Quest opened yesterday, Saturday, morning at the Cliff Anderson’s Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch, Georgetown.
Action on opening day at the FIBA-sanctioned 3×3 Basketball tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The first FIBA- sanctioned 3×3 tournament to be hosted in the English- speaking Caribbean; Mexico’s Ball so Hard pulled off the first victory of the weekend, deafeating Guyana’s Untouchables 20-9.
On the other hand, Guyana’s Renegades were the next team to join the winners’ circle, thumping Bermuda’s Hamilton 20-10 in a Pool B matchup.
Guyanese National player Travis Belgrave later described the encounter as intense, also addressing their home court advantage.
Belgrave expressed to the media, “It was a bit intense; it was a bit physical as per normal but we’re experienced in this kind of 3×3 play so, I think we adapted quite well and we’re very grateful for this victory.”
The Guyanese National player went on to, “Definitely, we’re home, we’re accustomed to these conditions so, I think we will do well.”
In other results yesterday, Cayman Storm of the Cayman Islands suffered a 15-21 loss at the hands of Suriname’s Team Paramaribo. An overtime contest result in St. Kitts and Nevis’ SKN Sugar Boys walking away with the win over BVI Elites 13-11, St. Lucia’s Elite Blazers downed Trinidad and Tobago’s Quarters United 19-15, Guyana’s Georgetown got pas Guatemala’s PSN 13-8 and USA’s NY Soundview got the better of the Netherlands’ Team Philipsburg 21-8.
As the afternoon progressed, Trinidad’s Maloney Pacers got the better of Ecuador’s Fit Storm 21-17. Puerto Rico’s Carolina cruised to a comfortable 21-13 win over Mexico’s Ball so Hard, while Guyana’s Renegades faltered against Switzerland’s Lausanne 15-21.
The , Dominican Republic’s Distrito Nacional got past Cayman Storm 21-17. Maloney Pacers picked up another victory, this time defeating USA’s NY Soundview 21-12.
Carolina kept their record clean with another win, this time against SKN Sugar Boys 18-13. In a shocking twist, St. Lucia’s Elite Blazers downed team Lausanne 15-13 while Distrito Nacional outplayed Guyana’s Georgetown 21-11.
NY Soundview rebounded with a 21-5 thumping of Ecuador’s Fit Storm and Guyana’s Untouchables went on to register their 3rd loss of the day, this time at the hands of BVI Elites 8-18.
The ‘One Guyana’ 3×3 Quest will continue this morning with the anticipated final scheduled for 18:30hrs this evening.
