Kaieteur News- Commissioner of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Clifton Anthony Hicken, on March 22, 2025, launched his much-anticipated book entitled ‘𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘆 j𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆’, which is a deep reflection of his birth, upbringing, schooling and academic pursuits, as well as his distinguished career spanning over three decades in the law enforcement landscape of Guyana.
The launch was held recently at the Police Officers’ Mess Annexe, Eve Leary, honoring a leader whose tenure and leadership have transformed policing through Guyana; setting Commissioner Hicken apart is his deep passion and commitment to the rule of law and the development of youth and communities.
His humble journey in the GPF begins from his entry as a Special Constable in 1986 to his historic appointment as Commissioner of Police. Hicken’s journey embodies resilience and visionary leadership. His tenure has been marked a significant achievement, inclusive of notable reduction in crime throughout Guyana and a more direct focus on ethical policing. This includes mandates for body cameras and increasing positive interaction with the public and all communities across the country. The infrastructural and overall transformation of the GPF under his leadership has set a new standard for what will be expected of future Commissioners of Police.
‘𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆’ offers an exploration of the challenges, successes, and lessons learned throughout a career that has directed Guyana’s evolving security environment, in both turmoil and prosperity. The books release comes at a critical time, as the nation’s rapid development and growth demands innovative approaches to law enforcement. This aligns with a central theme of the GPF 2022–2026 Strategic Plan, led by Commissioner Hicken, which prioritizes infrastructure, operational excellence and community partnerships tackling crime at its root.
During the launch, Commissioner Hicken highlighted that his book aims to foster meaningful dialogue between law enforcement professionals and the public.
“This book aspires to inspire a new generation of law enforcement professionals and community members alike to engage in meaningful dialogue and action, paving the way for a more just and equitable society,” he said.
Having over 37-years of invaluable experiences written within its pages; the book adds significant contribution to the ongoing conversation about policing in our society.
“By weaving together my personal experiences, empirical data, and thoughtful analysis, I intend to bridge the gap between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. The challenges faced by police officers are significant, but so too are the opportunities for growth, reform, and positive change. As we navigate the future of policing, it is essential to recognize humanity behind the badge and to work collaboratively towards solutions that enhance public safety while fostering trust and accountability,” commissioner Hicken shared.
The launch of the book not only celebrates Hicken’s remarkable career, but it also highlighted his legacy as a true crime-fighter. His dedication resulted in him willingly putting his family and academic pursuits on pause to ensure citizens of his country remain safe and peace prevailed throughout the land. Additionally, his firmly rooted stance on crime has ensured that the GPF remains a pillar of stability and justice.
In Hicken’s book he does not only explore his personal journey but also his role as a servant, and protector of people, detailing the challenges, successes, and his unwavering determination that led him to ultimately rise to the top of Guyana’s foremost law enforcement agency.
While being surrounded by family and numerous supporters, Commissioner Hicken successfully launched his book which offers an insight into his life and the principlres of community-focused and frontline policing. (Adapted from Commissioner Hicken’s Facebook post)
