Kaieteur News- The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) has pushed back against People’s Progressive Party General Secretary and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s recent comments suggesting that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), including the GHRA, should not receive government funding for being haters of the administration and not supporting progress.
This publication had reported that Jagdeo, while addressing party faithful at a PPP rally, said that the PPP government will only support NGOs that promote progress but not those that oppose the ruling party. Jagdeo had suggested that certain NGOs, including GHRA, harboured animosity towards the ruling PPP, labeling them “haters of the PPP.”
In a statement, GHRA clarified that it has never sought or received financial support from any government, past or present. “Jagdeo’s recent call, excluding the GHRA and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from financial support from the Government, is false, since the GHRA has never sought or received funding from the Guyana or any other Government, under this or any other ruling party,” GHRA stated.
The GHRA also criticised what it described as the PPP’s long-standing desire to control organisations across various sectors. The association argued that the government’s preference for welfare-based NGOs over advocacy groups is an attempt to marginalise those that push for policy changes. “The VP’s attack on NGOs is based on an invented rationale of ‘hate for the PPP’,” it was noted.
The organisation contended that NGOs engaging in policy advocacy are viewed as an irritant because they challenge the government’s approach to governance, particularly on matters of economic and social policy. GHRA further accused the administration of prioritising financial rewards over long-term policy solutions. “In keeping with its obsession with money, the ruling party acts as if every issue, legal or illegal, local or national, personal or organisational, is deemed resolvable by sporadic injections of cash grants rather than by seeking policy solutions better aligned to a more sustainable and dignified society,” the release stated.
