…urges stakeholders in agriculture, disaster management to be prepared
Kaieteur News- The Hydrometeorological Service of Guyana on Monday issued a public advisory, urging stakeholders in agriculture, disaster management, and other critical sectors to implement preparedness measures to minimize the impact of the expected weather conditions over the April-May-June (AMJ) 2025 season.
According to the advisory, near-normal to above-normal rainfall is expected across most regions of the country during this period.
The Hydromet office explained, “The transition into the long-wet season will bring increasing rainfall totals, with significant accumulation expected from May onward. While April is typically a transition period, the possibility of intense rainfall events and localized flooding remains high.”
These conditions may have notable implications for agriculture, water resource management, and disaster preparedness efforts.
Chief Hydrometeorological Officer, Dr. Garvin Cummings highlighted the importance of citizens, farmers, and policymakers remaining vigilant and taking proactive measures to prepare for and mitigate potential risks associated with increased rainfall.
He said, “We encourage all stakeholders to stay updated with our forecasts and advisories to make informed decisions.”
The forecast for the period includes -normal to above-normal rainfall, with an increasing likelihood of heavy downpours toward and onward of May. The Hydromet office said this can potentially lead to flooding in flood-prone areas. Heavy rainfall events are also possible throughout the month of April.
The temperature outlook for the period is expected to be warmer than usual in the daytime, while nighttime temperatures are expected to be near average.
Consequently, the Hydromet office said, “The agriculture sector should prepare for waterlogged fields and reduced access to farmlands, while disaster response agencies should remain alert to the potential for flash flooding in vulnerable areas.”
It has advised all citizens to stay informed by monitoring official weather updates through its website (www.hydromet.gov.gy), social media pages, and mobile alerts. Special attention should also be paid to short-range forecasts and weather analyses provided by the National Weather Watch Center for day-to-day planning.
The Hydrometeorological Service said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
