Kaieteur News- Thirty-six-year-old construction worker Rahbindra Chandradat died on Monday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), almost two years after a workplace accident left him paralyzed.
Chandradat, a husband and father of three, of Better Hope Centre Ground Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), fell approximately 20 feet from a building at a worksite in Turkeyen, on May 1, 2023. The fall resulted in a broken back, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
Speaking to Kaieteur News on Monday, Lisa Jaikarran, Chandradat’s common-law wife of 19 years, shared heart-wrenching details leading up to her husband’s death. She explained that on March 14, 2025, Chandradat was admitted to GPHC due to severe bedsores, a painful injury caused by prolonged pressure on the skin and underlying tissue.
“When I go and see him this morning, he passed away. When I went around 6 o’clock in the morning and I go up, I stand up outside a little bit and then the nurse come and tell me that Rahbindra passed away. Right now I feel sad that he passed away. I have three kids with him,” she said.
Reflecting on their final moments together, Lisa remembered her last visit to her husband on March 22, 2025, revealing that the conversation was filled with joy and hope for full recovery. “Last week Saturday he asked to buy apple for him and he eat. We sit down and we gaff. He asked to see his three children and said he want to live for his daughters,” she said.
Jaikarran spoke about how she managed to care for her husband after the accident, despite the challenges. “I used to try to help him because he had bedsores. I did everything for him—I cooked for him,” she said.
She also shared that Chandradat was expected to undergo a second surgery to help him regain mobility, but unfortunately, the cost was too expensive, and the family received little to no help since the incident.
She described the pain her family has endured since the accident, and how dealing with Chandradat’s death has only deepened that sorrow. “When I told my kids that their father passed away, they were so sad. They wanted to cry, but I told them everything will be alright,” she said. Jaikarran, who currently works as a cleaner at a nursery school, expressed determination to continue working hard for her children and to be both a mother and a father to them.
