Kaieteur News- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Saturday that unhealthy air quality levels for sensitive groups have been detected in Eccles, East Bank Demerara as authorities continue to work to address a fire at the Haags Bosch landfill.
It said the Guyana Fire Service is on the ground, working to contain the situation and minimise any potential impacts.
Reports of smoke from another location are also being investigated as the Agency continues to monitor the situation to assess any further effects on air quality.
According to the regulator, “Air quality monitoring has detected elevated Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in Eccles, reaching thresholds considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Conditions are expected to remain elevated for the next few hours before gradually improving overnight, though moderate air quality concerns may persist. Nearby communities, particularly Eccles and Providence, may experience lingering smoke and odors.”
Consequently, residents—especially children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions—are advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly strenuous exercise. EPA cautioned citizens in these communities to stay indoors as much as possible, keep windows and doors closed, and ensure proper ventilation if smoke is present. It also advised the use of a well-fitted N95 mask to help reduce inhalation of fine particles.
EPA said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
