Kaieteur News- ‘Musings of a Poet’ is an artistic showcase created by the National Drama Company (NDC) to speak to some of life’s most pressing social issues through dance, drama and other theatrical performances.
On March 22 and 23, 2025, the National Drama Company held its third annual night of poem called ‘Musings of a Poet’ in the foyer of the National Cultural Centre.
The night of poems was one filled with emotion taking the audience on an emotional roller coaster causing them to experience the feelings of happiness, heartache, grief and hope. Performers of the night incorporated dance, movement, music, and live performance.
In addition to their thrilling pieces from current members, to add a bit of extra flair to the show, Musings of a Poet included performances from past students at the National School of Theater Arts and Drama.
The event saw performances from the Kreative Art Dance Company, Confucius institute, Mark Luke-Edwards, O’Neilka Bacchus, Tashandra Inniss, Esther and Jonathan Hamer, Sonia Yarde, Le Tisha DaSilva, Carlene Gill-Kerr and many more.
For the production, Latiefa Agard performed ‘Baker Boy’, story of a boy who was baking cinnamon roll. Her piece turned out to be a fan favourite owing to its sexual nuances and steamy references. The audience gasped, blushed and giggled as Agard jerked their imaginations with her reference to moments of passion between lovers.
Carlene Gill-Kerr’s piece titled ‘I see you’, which spoke about all the challenges that persons face and how they can overcome them as well as their efforts of improvement.
Actor Mark Luke-Edwards’ dramatic showcase ‘Have you seen her?’ was reminiscent of Lionel Richie ‘Hello,’ it demonstrated a man deeply in love with a woman, and his admiration of her is evident as he can describe the very intricate things about her from the way she talks, walks and even the way she smiles.
‘Woman Gah Fuh Have Society’ was also another piece that was well received by the audience since it spoke about the challenges women face and how they can overcome them as collective while gracefully supporting their families. That was a dramatic performance by Le Tisha DaSilva, Allia George, Esther Hamer and Tchaiko Rodney.
‘Heaven’s Line’ was performed by Tchaiko Rodney, the daughter of the late Henry Rodney. Rodney’s piece was a dedication to her father where she expressed her nostalgia, wishing she had a medium of communicating with him.
For most of the night, the eyes of the audience were glued to the platform, most of the performances kept them entertained, informed and sometimes at the edge of their seats.
Speaking to The Waterfalls about the production, Creative Director of the NDC Al Creighton Jnr and its President Tashandra Inniss explained that during the preparation the team faced several challenges including acquiring sufficient funds for the show to successfully produced.
However, with assistance from their sponsors and senior members Ayanna Waddell, Esther Hamer, Jonathan Hamer and Tashandra Inniss, the group was able to overcome that challenge and deliver an unforgettable night of dramatic poetry. Creighton said that he was satisfied with the show and noted that while the theatre was small, it was a filled to capacity with attendees.
“It was a full house, and I am satisfied, even though it was a small theatre,” he said.
This publication also spoke with members of the audience who expressed their satisfaction with the production.
“Attending Musings of a Poet for the first time was an unforgettable experience. The show offered a diverse collection of poems, each one evoking deep emotion and thought. Themes of femininity, death, love and environmental protection were explored with raw honesty, making the night both introspective and socially conscious. I will most definitely be in attendance annually,” asserted one member of the audience.
“One of the most remarkable and memorable experiences I’ve ever had was attending the musings of poetry, not only was the scene serenely captivating, but the performances were profoundly soul touching,” another quipped.
The NDC was founded in January 2015 and celebrated its 10thanniversary, this year. The company is known for using performing arts to capture the emotions of members of the audience through entertaining and thought-provoking showcases.
