Kaieteur Sports- National Table Tennis Champion and many time Caribbean medalist, Nigel Bryan, is currently representing Guyana at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender Chennai India from March 25th to 31st 2025.
Bryan who has signaled his intention to commence representing Guyana’s national men’s team in key international engagements in 2025 and beyond, played his first WTT event when he played against Yiu Kwan of Hong Kong, a world leading player who has recently beaten current world #03 from Japan Tamokazu Harimoto and has victories against former world #01 Xu Xin from China.
Playing in his first international match after a long period, Bryan showed brilliance, but ended up losing to Kong 11-3,11-6,11-8. Taking some time to adapt, he gradually improved in each matched and offered some great counter offensive to Kong’s attack.
Bryan and Krystian Sahadeo’s participation in the WTT event were made possible by the GTTA, the University of Jain and National Sports Commission.
Bryan, a member of the Guyana Police Force Immigration, division is on a training scholarship in India along with national Junior Player Krystian Sahadeo are currently on a training stint made possible through collaborative engagement between Government of Guyana, the GTTA, the University of Jain and coordinated through the Goal programme with significant support and inputs from the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and National Sport Commission through Minister Charles Ramson and Director of Sport Mr. Steve Ninvalle.
The scholarship initiative offered training opportunities for athletes and coaches from six (6) sports disciplines to enhance their coaching and athletic capabilities. This is with the objective of exposing athletes and coaches to modern training methodologies, the use of scientific approaches to coaching in high yield environments in addition to offering youth athletes from the respective sports disciplines selected for the first edition of the project, the opportunity to train and practice in high performance environment along with high performance players.
The central aim is building a nucleus of talent which will possess and have the requisite skills to compete and represent Guyana at a high-level, winning medals, providing our athletes with the opportunities to fulfill their potential, advancing Guyana’s sports performance and results internationally. Bryan and Sahadeo will stay on to participate in a training camp at the championships.
