Kaieteur News- President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced plans for a four-lane highway in Region Two and the procurement of an additional fast ferry to service the Parika to Supenaam, Essequibo route.
Speaking at the opening of the Deeds and Commercial Registry building in Suddie on Wednesday, President Ali outlined several initiatives for the region, including improved transportation infrastructure and expanded access to education.
“When we built this highway, we never expected such fast and rapid growth in the traffic here in Region Two. So whilst in these five years, we focused heavily on community roads and community infrastructure, one of the plans and programmes that we have, that will commence before the end of this year, is the design and rebuilding of this highway into a four-lane highway in Essequibo,” the President stated.
Ali also disclosed that efforts are underway to enhance connectivity between Parika and Essequibo through the acquisition of a new ferry. “To support that, we are actively working to procure an additional fast ferry that will do the Parika to Essequibo route, that is ongoing,” he said.
In addition to transportation improvements, President Ali revealed plans to expand educational opportunities for Essequibo residents. “I have asked them within the next 8 months or before to operationalise university education here in Guyana through the Guyana Digital School so that our young people can have access right here in Essequibo to degrees and diplomas in pharmacy and these are the areas we have identified, degrees and diplomas in pharmacy, tourism and hospitality, agriculture science, dentistry, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering,” he told the gathering.
President Ali further pledged enhanced water services, stating, “Outside of that, there are some specific initiatives that we are working on, this region very soon will have 100% treated water through every single tap.”
On the agricultural front, Ali underscored the need to diversify farming efforts to boost income for rice farmers. He explained, “For rice farmers, I have asked EKA and the Ministry of Agriculture to work on developing with you complementary high value crops that will support your rice farming so that with your rice farming there will be complementary high value crops that bring additional income, disposable income and what I call buffet income to your pockets and your family’s pockets.”
