Kaieteur News- A 58-year-old man from Lot 41 Portuguese Quarters, Corentyne, Berbice was remanded on Wednesday for the possession of a firearm, ammunition and spent shells.
Walston Maxwell, also known as ‘Guzu Man’, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty. Maxwell is accused of having in his possession a 9mm pistol, without being a licensed firearm holder, as well as matching ammunition and spent shells. He pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
The prosecution told the court that on March 23, 2025 at Leopold and Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, a search was conducted on the defendant and a gun was found on his person at the front of his pants. The prosecution added that Maxwell reportedly said, “Officer, don’t shoot, watch me get a gun in front.”
Meanwhile, Maxwell told the court that due to his disability, he is unable to hold a gun. He stated that he was at a bar when police came and arrested him and a few others, and took them to a police station where he saw an officer putting together a gun. He alleged that the police stole several items from him including cash, a gold ring and a gold band.
Magistrate McGusty remanded Maxwell until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for April 23, 2025.
