Dear Editor,
I am deeply troubled by the way sexual assault cases are handled in our country, particularly when perpetrators are allowed to settle financially without the victim’s family being informed. My teenage niece was sexually assaulted, and without our knowledge, the alleged rapist reached a financial settlement with her.
How can the law permit such an arrangement without the family’s awareness or involvement? More importantly, why is financial compensation even an option for crimes as serious as sexual assault? Allowing perpetrators to buy their way out of accountability only emboldens them and others to continue harming victims. Certain crimes should never be resolved through financial settlements—sexual assault being one of them. Shouldn’t the State have a firm stance against this practice? A rapist is a danger to society and should not be given the opportunity to walk free simply by paying a sum of money.
What recourse exists for a victim who was misled or coerced into accepting a financial settlement, especially if they were too young to fully understand the implications? A teenager, without familial guidance, may not have the capacity to make such a decision on his or her own. The victim’s family also suffers from the trauma of the crime and should have a right to seek justice.
Why does our legal system allow sexual assault cases to be settled in this manner? Doesn’t this send a message that rapists can evade justice if they have the means to pay? Can the Attorney General clarify whether the victim’s family can continue to pursue justice even after a financial settlement has been reached?
If we, as a society, truly value justice, we must ensure that sexual assault cases are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law—without the option for perpetrators to buy their way out of consequences.
