Kaieteur News- The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the Photovoltaic (PV) training of 50 women through the Solar Apprenticeship Programme.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education Shannielle Hoosein Outar and Head of Executive Management at GPL, Kesh Nandlall holding the MoU
GPL in a press release on Monday said that the collaboration with the MoE will focus on providing opportunities for women in Regions 2, 5, 6, and 10, with the training set to commence in April 2025.
“The MoU will also support training for renewable energy stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability of solar education, ” GPL added.
The agreement was signed by the Head of Executive Management at GPL, Kesh Nandlall, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Shannielle Hoosein Outar.
In February, GPL announced plans to train 50 women in Solar Photovoltaic (PV) installation and maintenance as part of a paid apprenticeship programme. Additionally, GPL will train 20 more women in renewable energy management.
This programme is aimed at strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Guyana by providing opportunities for women to upskill in fields traditionally dominated by men. It forms part of the World Bank’s Caribbean Efficient and Green-Energy Buildings Project, which is designed to transform the region’s energy sector through sustainable energy solutions.
The project seeks to reduce energy consumption, expand renewable energy use in public buildings, and enhance the regulatory framework for energy efficiency and renewable energy investments across Caribbean nations.
As part of the programme, twenty women will begin a two-year apprenticeship in electrical installations and basic solar photovoltaic technology, with the training having started on March 3, 2025.
