Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycle Road Race 2025
Kaieteur Sports- Briton John of United We Stand Cycle Club has once again emerged victorious in the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycling Road Race second leg, crossing the finish line at Babu Jaan on Sunday in a remarkable time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 37 seconds (2:32:37).

The race kicked off outside Freedom House in New Amsterdam, sending cyclists up the Corentyne before looping back at Number 63 Village and concluding at Babu Jaan, Port Mourant.
The early miles saw a breakaway group surge ahead, while John remained with the main pack, biding his time. However, as the riders descended the Canje Bridge, he seized his opportunity; using the downward slope to propel himself forward and join the leading trio.
Despite challenging winds and blistering heat, John remained unfazed as the race built toward an intense sprint finish. Riding alongside him were the tactical Jamal John and Christopher Griffith, both strong contenders.
One of the race’s standout moments came in the final stretch, where Phillip Clark showcased sheer determination. Spotting an opening, Clark launched a daring breakaway, momentarily pulling ahead. In what became a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse, pairs, trios, and mini-groups battled the elements in pursuit.
With tires humming and adrenaline surging, it all came down to a final sprint between Clark and Briton John. In the end, John found an extra gear, surging ahead to claim a hard-fought victory, with Clark settling for second place. Jamal John secured third, followed by Griffith, Sequan Sandy, and Alexander Leung, finishing in that order.
The recently concluded Second leg of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Road Race culminated with mass celebration at Babu Jaan. Divisional winners along with participants shared photo-op with Ministers Zulfikar Mustapha and Joseph Hamilton (Labour).
The other divisions saw intense competition, in the Juniors’ category, Alexander Leung took the top spot, finishing ahead of Alex Newton, while Sidwell Sandy claimed third.
The Veterans (Open) division saw Phillip Clark clinching the title, with Husband and Robin Persaud securing second and third, respectively. Junior Niles dominated the Veteran Under-50 category, with Talim Shaw and Ian Jackson rounding out the podium.
Meanwhile, Chris Hector emerged victorious in the Juveniles’ division.
A Race of Legacy and Endurance
The event was hailed as a resounding success by the coordinating committee. More than just a test of endurance, the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycling Road Race serves as a tribute to Dr. Cheddi Jagan, a leader revered for his contributions to democracy and social justice.
