“The advice I would give is to just stick to it even though it gets hard. Just stick to it and it is going to work out in the end.”

Kaieteur News- In another instalment of ‘Young Entrepreneur On The Move’, today we turn our attention to 17-year-old Elon Barrington, the young entrepreneur behind a cleaning service business called ‘Jaguar Jet Wash’.
Opening its doors to the public this past Monday, Jaguar Jet Wash provide clients with a variety of washing services, including full house washing, fence washing, window washing, concrete surfaces, driveways and yard washing.
Barrington, who hails from Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), shared the reason for opening his own business. He explained that he is on the path to becoming a pastor and with some extra time on his hands, he decided to get involved in something meaningful.
“The reason why I started is because, first of all, I am called to be a pastor, but in order to achieve some goals, I got to be in full-time ministry- but I would need support… So, I decided that the best way to be in full-time ministry is by starting a business, so I can manage my time,” he explained.
The idea behind his jet wash business came as a result of a recommendation from his pastor who did similar work. After much thought, Barrington said he decided to start and now, he even has another person working alongside him.
According to Barrington, acquiring the skills to get his jet wash business going was simple since he too is familiar with operating the pressure washer machine, given his experience working at an auto sales business.
“I used to work at a company called ‘Bear Auto Sales’ and I used to work with cleaning of cars and stuff like that, and then at home, I have a presser washer and I use to wash the yard- and that is how I learn to use it and to operate the machine properly,” he explained.
Barrington added that the jet wash business was also a good idea since it is not a service that is easily accessible in his community. He said that he operates when clients schedule the services between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm, five days a week. The business extends beyond his neighbourhood to other areas in Region Four.
Newly opened, the young man said that, so far, the support has been good. He revealed that already has clients scheduled to attend to. Expressing gratitude, Barrington said that his mother helped him purchase the cleaning items while his father helped with buying the presser washer.
Looking forward to seeing where the journey takes him, the young entrepreneur related that he wants to do more with his business. “My plan is to start this year and save up to buy a company vehicle so we could have a better source of transportation. Then, we can go to different places and then, eventually, hire more people so they can take it on,” he disclosed.
While he is still relatively new to the business realm, Barrington is of the view that small businesses leave a significant impact on society, since they pave the way for job opportunities for others.
Asked what he thinks can be done to boost small businesses locally, the teenager called for more support- in this case, financial support- specifically from those in authority.
With that being said, Barrington would like to encourage those who are thinking of starting a business to not give up on their dreams and aspirations. He noted that managing a business is not an easy walk in the park. He said, “The advice I would give is to just stick to it even though it gets hard. Just stick to it and it is going to work out in the end.”
