Kaieteur News- A three-year-old girl died on Wednesday evening after a metal gate fell on her while she was playing with her sibling at their home in Exmouth, Essequibo Coast, Region Three.
The incident occurred around 17:20 hrs.
The dead toddler has been identified as Alaia Etwaroo, a preschool student. Etwaroo lived with her mother, 28-year-old Saudia Hannif, a housewife, and her father, 30-year-old Ganesh Etwaroo, a rice farmer, along with other family members.
Ganesh Etwaroo told police that moments before the incident, his two daughters, Alaia and her four-year-old sister Sarfeena Etwaroo, were playing on the western side of the yard. Suddenly, their mother heard a loud noise coming from the area where the girls were.
When she rushed outside, she discovered “her daughter Alaia lying on the ground with a metal gate on top of her,” police said.
Alaia was quickly removed from beneath the gate and found to be bleeding from a wound on her forehead. She was immediately rushed to the Charity Public Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
At the scene, the police found the metal gate, measuring approximately 10 feet in length and 6 feet in height, on the ground. Blood stains were visible in the area where the gate had fallen.
Investigations are ongoing.
