Kaieteur Sports- The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) hosted a fielding seminar last Friday for young cricketers and coaches alike from the city, conducted by West Indies fielding coach Rayon Griffith.
West Indies Fielding Coach Rayon Griffith accepts his certificate of appreciation on behalf of the GCA following a fruitful seminar held at DCC.
Griffith, the former then Guyana Jaguars Assistant Coach/Manager and fielding coach, was one of the key figures responsible for creating the military-like weekly training system which was introduced to the National team almost a decade ago.
The Jaguars, later renamed the Harpy Eagles, would dominate the regional 4-Day scene for years while capturing a handful of titles, a key reflection of the work put in by Griffith during his stint with the championship dynasty franchise.
With roles such as Manager of the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Griffith has now cemented himself as Fielding coach of the West Indies men’s senior team, following a number of roles with the Caribbean side over the years.
With the former Guyana player-turned coach back home, the GCA welcomed the Windies Fielding coach to the Demerara Cricket Club Ground where the one-day seminar was hosted to a large turnout.
Griffith spent essential time with the young players from across the Georgetown demographic, which included captains, players, local coaches to name a few.
Attendees were taught the basics of fielding while including some advanced techniques which were easily carried out by the attentive players.
Areas such as, targeting the stumps accurately during throws, wicket-keeping drills such as moving, timing, attentiveness, proper throwing methods among other intricate areas were taught/carried out under the Coach’s watchful eye.
Following the end of the programme, Griffith was presented with a certificate of appreciation by GCA Cricket Development Chairman, Mark Harper and the Association, as well as players and members of the club. (CR)
