Kaieteur News- Elections will be held by year-end and President Irfaan Ali has made it clear that the government will not be going a day beyond its constitutional mandate.
There have been calls by opposition parties for biometrics to be implemented before the 2025 regional and general elections, and they have said that they are willing to wait beyond the mandated time if that is what it takes for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to have these systems in place.
On Saturday, responding to a question from the media as when the government is likely to announce a date for elections and whether the potential November date is still being contemplated, he said that constitutionally he has a lot of time.
“So don’t worry. What you can be assured of is that this government will not go a single day beyond its constitutional mandate. Unlike what you are accustomed to or what you would have been exposed to after the no confidence motion and leading into that election,” he said. The President assured that his administration will stay within its constitutional mandate and confidently march into elections.
The President’s comments strengthen the position relayed by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo back in November of last year. This publication reported on November 19, 2024 that the Government of Guyana will not exercise flexibility in the timeline for the holding of General and Regional Elections.
Speaking to reporters at his weekly press conference, the VP who is also General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party /Civic (PPP/C) had said that it is imperative that the 2025 elections are held when they are constitutionally due.
“We don’t want extra time; we want elections held on schedule, with international observers, and we want all ineligible names removed from the lists. We want political parties to deploy robust polling agents in each polling place. We want full compliance with the new ROPA. We want the statements of poll published before the tabulation,” he explained.
