Kaieteur News- With $5.8 billion allocated towards education delivery in Region Two this year, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is preparing to spend approximately $90 million out of the funds to construct new nursery schools at Bethany, Siriki and Hackney communities.

This is according to an advertisement for bids issued by the Regional Administration. Each project is estimated to cost $30 million.
Kaieteur News understands that nursery classes in some of the communities are being accommodated in a section of the primary school building, for example at Bethany Village.
Speaking with this newspaper on the new school project for her village, Toshao of Bethany, Ms. Sonia Latchman said, “As Toshao, we are happy to have a nursery school within our village.”
She added that, “Our REO Ms. Susanah Saywak was on an outreach to our village last year and she usually visit all areas. As such, she visited the primary school which houses both nursery and primary students over the years and saw there is a need for a nursery school.”
Welcoming the new school building, Toshao Latchman shared that when completed, the school will benefit over 40 nursery pupils.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand has repeatedly said that having achieved universal primary education, the intention now is to achieve universal nursery and secondary education.
“What universal means, it means all over. So, all over Guyana, we want nursery aged children to be able to access nursery schools and nursery education in Guyana is not compulsory as yet but we have registered the highest enrollment in the Commonwealth Caribbean at more than 85 percent of our nursery age cohort attending nursery school,” she said previously.
The minister added that where there is a gap, it would be where there are not enough schools and that is mostly in the hinterland regions.
Noting the importance of nursery education, the education minister at the commissioning ceremony for the $60M St. Gabriel’s Nursery last year, stated that if nursery teachers put out children who cannot read at their grade level, then the entire system feels that.
“They go into Grade One and struggle, to Grade Two and struggle, reach Grade Six and can’t write a single word on the NGSA paper, and so, this is the level where we’re investing significantly to ensure they’re getting the foundation they need,” she said.
Efforts are being made to construct and in other cases rehabilitate schools to properly accommodate learners.
Since 2020, the government has completed over 30 new nursery schools, reconstructed seven, extended four and construction is ongoing for over 25 more new nursery schools across the country.
