Kaieteur News- Listen nah, me people! If you ain’t hear de big news yet, lemme be de one to tell you – Vybz Kartel, yes, de Worl’ Boss himself, just drop a bombshell over at State House dat got everybody phone buzzing like jumbie bee nest!
De man announce right deh in front President Ali face dat he coming back to Guyana, and not just for show and wave. He planning to pick TWO local artists – one man, one woman – to collaborate with him on some international business. You hearing me good? INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS!
Now, dis is where me get serious small bit. We been crying out long time bout how Guyanese artists can’t catch break. How we talent getting stifle up in dis small place with no real chance to shine beyond GT and Berbice. All dem excuses ’bout “industry too small” and “no proper studio” and “nobody na recognize we sound.”
Well, guess what? All dem excuse just fly out de window like bat at sunset!
De President himself right deh backing dis thing. He tell dem artists straight up: “get serious.” And me like how he put it. Dis ain’t no time for play-play. Dis is opportunity knocking with gold knuckles, and if you ain’t ready to answer proper, somebody else go grab it.
Lemme break it down for all dem artists who reading dis column right now while drinking dem morning tea or coffee:
Stop de crab-in-barrel mentality: Yes, only two people go get pick, but everybody can still win if we show up proper. When international spotlight shine on Guyana music scene and see quality, more opportunities go come. So push up you neighbor, not pull dem down!
Polish up you craft NOW: Kartel ain’t looking for raw talent. He looking for somebody ready for de big stage. If you can’t remember you own lyrics or you sound like you singing in bathroom, go fix dat before audition day. Rehearse till you tongue tie, den rehearse some more!
Bring something Guyanese to de table: Don’t try to be Jamaica Part Two or Trinidad Junior. We got we own flavour – mix in some chutney vibes, some soca energy, some old school Guyanese folk rhythm. Bring something fresh dat only Guyana could produce!
Fix up you social media business: Before Kartel even land back, make sure people can find you online. Clean up dem old embarrassing posts, put up proper pictures, get some decent recordings up. Opportunity don’t only happen on stage – it happen when people search you up after.
Listen, me ain’t trying to lecture nobody, but we been waiting too long for dis kinda chance. Remember when Machel Montano first notice Timeka Marshall? Dat one link-up change she whole career trajectory. Dis is dat kinda moment.
And for dem who na planning to audition, still get excited! When international eyes turn to we local scene, everybody benefits. More shows go happen, more sponsors go come forward, more young people go see music as serious career path, not just weekend hobby.
President Ali jumping on board dis initiative show something changing at de top too. Government recognizing dat creative industry na just people making noise – it’s economic opportunity, cultural export, national pride boost.
So whether you planning to grab mic and audition, or just supporting from sideline, recognize dat dis Vybz Kartel moment bigger dan just two lucky artists. Dis about changing narrative. For too long, we been saying “nothing na happen for artists in Guyana.” Well, something happening now.
Ah gan wrap up with dis one thought: When Vybz Kartel say he ain’t just looking at Jamaica and Miami but “doing it big” right here in Georgetown, dat statement is powerful. Dat statement says we worthy. We culture valuable. We talent deserving.
So prove him right, Guyana. Show up and show out when audition time come. Because dis opportunity na just about making one hit song, dis is about putting Guyana music pon de map proper fashion!
And you can quote de Chatterbox pon dat!
