Dear Editor,
Mr. Nazar (Shell) Mohamed in social media remarks (Mar 4) revealed how he supported the PPP all his life and how his son’s life is now being threatened by planned assassination because he seeks elective office.
It is widely known that Shell supported the PPP financially going back to the days of Jagan from the 1960s. Privately, party stalwarts acknowledged that Mohamed was the financial backbone of the party and that he played a critically important role in the return of the PPP in office in August 2020. And the party, under the leadership of Jagdeo and Irfaan Ali, has turned its (their) back on this gentleman and his family.
Worse, they have put the lives of members of the family in danger; warnings and threats have been issued daily to Azruddin to back off from politics as the party leadership fears Azruddin would defeat them. In Indian culture, as schooled by my grandparents, it is called “Neemak Haramism”. Jagan and the stalwarts of his era would not have been ‘neemakharam’ (ingrates) as some currently in the government, those seeking self-enrichment instead of party, people, and national interest.
They fear a defeat would result in prosecution and confiscation of ill-gotten wealth obtained from massive corruption. Those in the know are familiar with Shell’s role when the PPP was in opposition. When funds and support were scarce during the difficult years of the 1980s, Shell was there. You ask any activist, and they will tell you how much Shell financed the party during struggling times. He gave money for every PPP Congress except a few of the early ones. During 2024 PPP Congress at the Convention Center, he gave the largest donation to host and feed delegates from all over the country.
He was with the party during the no confidence motion of 2018 and the appointment of Patterson as GECOM Chair. He provided support for court cases related to both. He was very close with the party leadership (Irfaan and Jagdeo) during the 2020 general elections, providing support during the campaign as well as the multiple court cases on the counting, recounting, declaration of the results, and swearing in of Irfaan Ali. It is not forgotten that he provided security to Irfaan during those many months and secured transportation for his swearing in on August 2, 2020 as well as during the early days of Irfaan’s Presidency.
He worked behind the scenes during the five months from March 3 to August 1, 2020 to combat rigging, and he and a handful of others convinced key figures (at Gecom) to declare the outcome that represented the will of voters. Shell was with Irfaan and Jagdeo all the time until the second half of last year. He was a good man, a great person until the son began showing interest in launching a political party and seeking elective office as President. He was never accused of breaking Guyana’s laws and no local court ever charged him. But all of a sudden because Azruddin decides to run for office, the PPP administration comes up with contrived allegations against Shell and his son. This is the gratitude that the Mohamed’s receive for their loyalty to the party founded by the Jagan’s and other heroes of the independence movement. Jagan would never approve of such neemakharam behavior. I call on Irfaan and Jagdeo to cease and desist in their hostility towards the Mohamed’s and provide security cover to the Mohamed’s and anyone else seeking elective office. Democracy is about anyone having the right to run for office. Don’t stifle democracy!
Yours truly
Dan Ramcharitar
