Kaieteur News- A landmark event celebrating the life and legacy of Edgar Mittleholzer, Guyana’s first professional novelist, will take place at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown, on March 1st and 2nd.
This monumental production, titled A Pleasant Career, is inspired by the life, works, and achievements of Mittleholzer, one of the Caribbean’s pioneering writers.
Mittleholzer, a trailblazer in Caribbean literature, is known for his contributions to the literary world, paving the way for other Caribbean writers to have their works published. With over 20 books to his name, including novels, essays, and short stories, Mittleholzer’s influence on the literary landscape is profound. His works, including Creole Chips, My Bones and My Flute, The Kaywana Blood, Shadows Move Among Them, and Sylvia, have been regarded as vital cornerstones of Caribbean literature.
The play, A Pleasant Career, written by the late Dr. Michael Gilkes, is a tribute to Mittleholzer’s life and literary accomplishments. First staged in 1992, the play won the inaugural Guyana Prize for Literature in the drama category. This production is directed by veteran Ron Robinson, with dramaturgy and set design by Sir Henry Muttoo, a well-respected figure in the performing arts. The cast boasts notable performances by Michael Ignatius, Rovindra Persaud, Mark Luke-Edwards, Derek Gomes, and other talented actors, including Sonia Yarde, Latiefa Agard, and Dwayne Hackett.
The play will be staged for the first time in Guyana on Saturday, March 1st at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at the National Cultural Centre’s Small Theatre. Tickets are available for $2,000 at the National Cultural Centre box office.
A special event will follow the Sunday’s performance, as students from the University of Guyana’s Department of Language and Cultural Studies and local secondary school students will attend a Zoom discussion with Dr. Juanita Cox, an expert on Edgar Mittleholzer’s life and work.
Produced by GEMS Theatre Productions in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, this event aligns with the government’s “One Guyana” initiative, promoting national pride and unity through cultural expression.
