Kaieteur News- The Ministry of Health on Friday announced that the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) has been accredited as a National Influenza Centre (NIC) by the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO).
The Ministry in a statement said that the NPHRL has now officially become a member of the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), a critical international network dedicated to monitoring and responding to influenza outbreaks worldwide.
This accreditation represents a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its capacity to detect, monitor, and respond to influenza and other viral threats. According to the Ministry, the recognition not only highlights the NPHRL’s expertise but also enhances Guyana’s ability to contribute to global health security.
“As part of GISRS, the NPHRL will play an integral role in the global surveillance network that monitors the evolution of influenza viruses worldwide,” the statement from the Ministry explained.
“This ensures that public health responses are timely, evidence-based, and effective in mitigating the risks posed by these viruses,” the ministry said.
The WHO’s GISRS continuously monitors influenza activity around the world, conducts risk assessments, and offers recommendations for public health responses. With the NPHRL’s inclusion in this network, Guyana will have a direct role in sharing vital data and insights, assisting in vaccine development, and improving preparedness and response strategies.
“This accreditation underscores the commitment and expertise of the NPHRL in safeguarding public health,” the Ministry added.
As a part of its new responsibilities, the NPHRL will collaborate with international health authorities, contributing to global influenza surveillance and outbreak management. This will also ensure that Guyana remains aligned with the best practices in viral surveillance, data sharing, and influenza strain monitoring.
