12th Balram Shane Memorial fund raising 50 over Cricket…
All is set for the 12th Annual Balram Shane Challenge Fund raising 50 overs cricket match between two of Guyana’s top teams, archrivals Albion Community and Port Mourant fixed for today at the Albion Sports Complex ground.
The match is being sponsored by Businessman Deonarine Balram of Balram Shane General Store, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice beginning at 09:30 hrs.
A close and exhilarating match is anticipated as is the case whenever these two teams tangle in any cricket match. Both teams have named their squads. With the teams showing a number of new faces a bumper crowd is expected to be on hand and a close encounter is envisaged.
The Albion line up will include West Indies player Narsingh Deonarine, Kandasammy Surujnarine, Veerapen Permaul, Ranga Latchana, Latchman Bishram, Doodnauth Lallbeharry, Andy Mohan and Gudakesh Motie Kanhai, Balchand Baldeo, Tyrone Doodnauth, Avenash Wajib, Suraj Ramcharran, Sais Latchana. The manager is Muthushanni Permaul.
Port Mourant on the other hand will be lead by Yougendra Harrinarine and the other players include, Shastri Persaud, Bhojnarine Persaud, Rajendra Bholo, Raju Singh, Shamir Khan, Roopnarine Ramgobin, Harrinarine Chattergoon, Davendra Thakurdeen, Tony McKenzie, Chandru Arjune, Mahendra Veerasammy, Beesham Deplall, Manoj Looknauth, Madan Boodram and Andrew Arjune. Former Guyana Captain Andrea Percival will serve as the player coach.
The winning team will receive the Balram Shane Memorial trophy and cash incentives, while a number of individual awards will also be up for grabs including the Man-of-the-match, best bowler and best batsman among others, all compliments of the family, who will be on hand to present the winners with their accolades.
According to Organiser, Deonarine Balram, of the Balram Shane General Store in Rose Hall Town, this competition is being played in memory of his father who was a former player and cricket enthusiast who would have rubbed shoulders with many of the greats from the area including Basil Butcher, Rohan Kanhai, Joe Salomon, Ivan Madray and Alvin Kallicharran among others.
He stated that apart from Cricket it is their way of giving back to the community from which they garner their support in a tangible way.
Proceeds from the game will be dived equally and distributed to the two teams to assist them with the cricket development programmes. Mr. Balram further stated that four second division teams and a few other organizations will also benefit from the proceeds of the game. These entities will be given tickets to sell and keep the proceeds from the ticket sales.
Representatives of the family will be on hand to coordinate and help with the distribution of prizes.
