 Kaieteur News- As we install festive lights and decorations in homes and public spaces, transforming them into wonderlands during the holiday season, it is crucial to prioritize safety and quality. The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) plays its part in ensuring safety by enforcing the requirements of the Guyana Standard GYS 232:2003 – Safety for Seasonal and Holiday Decorative Products.

This standard was developed to ensure that decorative lighting products meet stringent safety requirements, reducing the risk of electrical hazards, fires, and accidents during the holiday season.

Based on requirements, the GNBS Product Compliance Team monitors decorative lights which must undergo rigorous testing for safety, and to ensure these products carry vital information for users.

Essential details which must accompany decorative lights offered for sale include the Manufacturer’s Name or Trademark, the Month or Year Manufactured, the Voltage Ratings and Certification Marks which attest to the quality of these items.  User instructions for appropriate installation and care must also be included.

 Further, labels on lights shall provide legible instructions pertaining to the risk of fire, electric shock or injury, operation of the product and the user-maintenance and storage. These instructions encompass a comprehensive overview of risks and empower users with the knowledge to navigate potential hazards.

With increased electrical usage from string lights, illuminated ornaments, and other decorations, the holiday season presents a higher risk for electrical related incidents. The GNBS continues to be vigilant to ensure importers, manufacturers and retailers offer products meeting the requirements of standards, offering peace of mind to consumers.

Meanwhile, consumers are encouraged to choose standard compliant lights to illuminate and beautify their spaces. Making this smart choice will protect families and properties from potential dangers.

The following are some useful tips to consider when purchasing decorative electrical items:

 

  • Choose the Right Lights: Use lights labelled “For Indoor Use Only” or “For Outdoor and Indoor Use” as specified.
  • Avoid Fire Hazards: Do not install lights on trees with metallic needles, leaves, or branches and ensure that lights are mounted securely to prevent wire insulation damage.
  • Electrical Safety: Never overload outlets or connect multiple small strings to one fitting.
  • Check Labels: Ensure labels are legible for safety guidance over time. Adhere to labelling information.
  • Inspect before Use: Always inspect lights and cords for any signs of damage, such as frayed wires, cracked bulbs, or loose connections. Damaged lights should be replaced immediately to prevent electrical hazards.
