Dear Editor,
Every Guyanese looks forward to welcoming the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi to Guyana. But I hereby make a bet that speeches by the President and other Top Brass will assiduously avoid any mention of the man who ensured the visit of the first Prime Minister of India to Guyana, Her Excellency Indira Gandhi.
When they visit the Monument to honour Mahatma Gandhi in the Promenade Gardens, unveiled by Sir. David Rose, they will not mention the person who ensured that the City Council identified the spot where the Gandhi Monument is now situated. and ensured its construction in 1969.
And if they go to pay homage to the Enmore Martyrs Monument at Enmore, they will conveniently forget whose idea it was and that some of us toiled extra hours to ensure its completion on time.
And if they go to honour the first batch of Indentured workers, and the two ships, the Whitby and the Hesperus, that brought them to Guyana, situated at the Indian Commemoration Monument Garden, at the western extreme of Merriman’s Mall, which Mayor and Prime Minister acceded to the request of Dr. Yesu Persaud to make this area available.
Who initiated the construction of the Non Aligned Monument which contains the busts of Presidents Gamal Adbel Nasser, Kwame Nkrumah, Jawaharlal Nehru and Josip Broz Tito, situated at the Company Path Gardens and if they drive pass that Gardens, who will tell Modi about the persons who had the four leaders bust erected there?
Sincerely
Hamilton Green
Elder
