Dear Editor,
The Democratic National Congress wishes to advise Guyanese that it will unfortunately be unable to fund its Annual General Meeting for 2024, which would have served as the forum to kick-start its activities nationwide. The party itself however still remains open to individuals and organizations wanting to offer themselves as Guyana’s next generation of politicians at the 2025 national elections.
In the circumstances, Civil Society organizations are especially urged to take up the baton and step in to host a forum on Guyana’s future post-2025 at which the DNC can table our ideas and proposals for national discussion and adoption. Guyana stands to give up as much as US$5-10 billion over the next five years under either a PPP or PNC-led government.
The DNC’s policy recommendations also include: 1. A cost-of-living adjustment for public servants, inclusive of local government workers such as municipal staff, 2. Poverty adjustment allowance for persons/households with incomes of less than $80,000/100,000; 3. Compensate sugar workers going back to our proposed year of 2010; 4. Greater regulatory oversight and complaints authority to eliminate abuse of rice millers; 5. Stronger financial, infrastructural support for all classes of farmers through a revitalized Ministry of Agriculture; Increased financial support for small business initiatives with counselling services; 4. Review of salary scale for teachers with particular emphasis on nursery and primary school teachers; 5. Unemployment Insurance; 6.
Overhaul of education system with emphasis on upgrading schools and increasing number of schools; reduce the student/teacher ratio to 20-25 students; salaries and stipends for sports coaches and professional athletes; 7. Use money that would have been given away under either a PPP or PNC-led government to finance the acquisition of house-lots for all Guyanese, in addition to exploring opportunities for refunding the cost of house-lots for those who acquired these since 2010. These exclude our proposals for our 2025 Manifesto. We estimate that we have until at least the end of January or February next year to acquire 50 percent of the votes at the elections.
The DNC’s cards are on the table, our future, a bright future, lies ahead of us.
Sincerely,
Craig Sylvester,
(Guyanese, Civil Society Urged to Host Forum on Options for Alternative Government Post-2025.)
