(Bartica youth group)
Dear Editor,
The Bartica United Youth Development Group (BUYDG) once again is hereby respectfully appealing to the Government of Guyana to extend eligibility for the $100,000 cash grant distribution to include children under the age of 18. While the Government’s current policy limits eligibility to individuals 18 years and older, BUYDG believes that young Guyanese children should not be excluded from this national initiative that aims to enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
In our letter dated October 18, 2024 to the Government, BUYDG proposed a solution that ensures children under 18, who represent the future of our country, also benefit from the Government’s financial support. The group suggests the creation of a dedicated financial assistance fixed deposit for each child under 18, which would allow both the Government and families to contribute over time. These funds would accrue interest and be accessible to the child when they turn 18.
BUYDG emphasized that excluding children from the cash grant program is a missed opportunity for the nation. Investing in the well-being of young people now is an investment in the future growth and development of Guyana. The group outlined several compelling reasons why children under 18 should benefit from this initiative, focusing on how this investment will empower them when they reach adulthood:
A dedicated savings account for children will provide a financial cushion to help them start their adult lives on stronger footing. When these children turn 18, they will have access to the funds accumulated over the years, which can be used for higher education, skill-building opportunities, or entrepreneurial ventures. This early investment in their financial security will set them up for success as they transition into adulthood, helping them become productive and contributing members of society.
As Guyana continues to experience growth, especially in sectors like oil and gas, education, and infrastructure, it is essential that our youth have the resources they need to seize opportunities in these fields. A cash grant for children, placed in a growing savings account, would allow them to pursue advanced education or training in specialized fields, equipping them with the skills necessary to fill the jobs driving the nation’s prosperity. By prioritizing the financial empowerment of youth, we are preparing them to participate in and contribute to the country’s economic development for years to come.
Introducing children to savings and financial management at an early age encourages lifelong good financial habits. Through this programme, children will learn about saving, budgeting, and investing, providing them with crucial skills that will serve them throughout their lives. By instilling financial literacy early on, we empower young Guyanese to make informed decisions, manage their finances responsibly, and plan for a stable future.
Many children in Guyana come from low-income families where access to opportunities like education, healthcare, and extracurricular activities is limited. A cash grant for children would help level the playing field, providing financial support that can help families invest in their children’s futures. This grant would ease the financial burden on families, allowing them to better meet the costs of school supplies, healthcare, and other essential needs. For children from disadvantaged backgrounds, this support could be the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and accessing opportunities that were previously out of reach.
The future prosperity of Guyana depends on the potential of its youth. By providing a financial foundation for children today, we are investing in a more equitable and prosperous future for the entire nation. These young people will grow up to become the next generation of doctors, engineers, teachers, public servants, and business leaders who will drive the development of Guyana. By prioritizing the well-being of youth, we are building the foundation for a stronger, more sustainable society.
Now that the recommendations for bank accounts have been made, we want to stress that age should not diminish anyone’s status as a citizen of Guyana. Whether born in Guyana or having become a citizen through other means, every citizen is equally entitled to the benefits provided by the government. Just as the $100,000 cash grant was made available to eligible adults, we further recommend that all future grants be equally distributed to all Guyanese citizens, regardless of age.
Our country must not discriminate against or disenfranchise any group of citizens from access to the nation’s wealth. Every citizen, young or old, has a right to benefit from the resources of the country.
Conclusion: A Stronger Future Through Investment in Our Youth
BUYDG believes that excluding children under 18 from the cash grant programme is a short-sighted decision. By creating a system that allows these young citizens to benefit from this grant, we can provide them with the tools they need to succeed once they reach adulthood. Access to these funds will give them the freedom and resources to pursue their dreams, whether it be through education, business ventures, or community development, ensuring they are well-equipped to contribute to Guyana’s continued growth and prosperity.
With Guyana’s continued economic progress, we must not overlook the potential of our children. A small investment in them today will reap significant rewards in the future. As the government looks to build a stronger, more inclusive society, it is crucial to include children in this national initiative, ensuring they are prepared for the opportunities ahead.
The BUYDG remains committed to advocating for policies that prioritize the well-being and development of all Guyanese, particularly our youth. We believe that by supporting our children now, we are creating a future where every young person has the chance to thrive and contribute to the prosperity of Guyana. We remain committed to the integrity of this initiative and working together for the benefit of Guyana and all its citizens.
Thank you for your attention. We look forward to your response.
Best regards
