Kaieteur Sports – There are some popular adages like – Giving brings a release; the more you give the more you get. For Rafeek Kassim a Rotarian and engineer and businessman and one who wears many hats he is content to do as much as he could.
Donor and Rotarian Raffik Kassim present the keys to the building to Rotary Club of New Amsterdam President.
The Rotary Club of New Amsterdam (RCNA) which is considered as one of the leading Rotary organizations in the country has been without a home since its inauguration in 1987.
It has been meeting at various locations whenever it has meetings. With the changing times and the frequency of activities the need was there for a home for the organization. Kassim, a past president of the Club, decided that he will take matters into his own hands.
He built a brand new office and handed it over to the club. The unveiling of the Plaque and commissioning of the Club House was done recently at No2 Village East Canje Berbice.
The keys to the building were subsequently handed over to President Keine Reid.
Speaking at the ceremony, Kassim a former first division cricketer and avid sportsman, stated that he was more than happy to construct a home for the club. He said Rotary has done a lot for him and as such he is pleased to give back and will continue to assist in whatever way possible.
President Keine Read said that he and the members of the club are extremely happy to be a part of history. He stated that he is even more pleased to be the President when the feat was being accomplished. He thanked Mr Kassim for the wonderful and selfless gesture and promised that they will make the best use of the facility.
A pledge of $100,000 was made by Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch to help purchase furniture for the office.
Meanwhile, during the activity, a new member was inducted into the club. She is Ms Diyaiyyih Dwarka called Diya. Her introduction was done by Attorney at Law and Past President of the Club Charlyn Artiga who congratulated her.
Ms Dwarka is the holder of a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA). She once served as the Principal of the School of the Nations in New Amsterdam and is skilled in various fields. Her current position is Regional Housing Officer Region 6.
A congratulatory message was sent by Assistant Governor Elizabeth Cox who was unavoidably absent. Her message was read by read by Mr Kassim. Ms Cox, welcome and congratulated her as she join the RCNA and most of all the Rotary family. She encouraged her to make full use of her skills and expertise to help enhance the work and image of Rotary.
“Rotary offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. I encourage you to actively participate in your club’s activities, projects, and meetings and to take full advantage of these opportunities. The RCNA stands out as a ‘club of excellence’ in all areas. She wished her well and a long a fruitful stay in the organization.
Ms. Dwarka, for her path, is looking forward to a long a fruitful association with the august body and to help the rotary in its quest to serve and make the community a better place.
