Dear Editor,
The Left has taken a decisive lead in the second round of the French national elections. Having led in the first round of the voting, expectations were high that the far- right National Rally would garner enough votes to form the next government.
Those hopes were dashed after the left-wing parties closed ranks and successfully thwarted the expectations of the far-right National Rally. Latest exit polls showed the leftist New Popular Front alliance in the lead, followed by Macron’s centrist party with the National Rally coming third.
The gamble by the French President Emanuel Macron to call early elections following significant gains by the far-right in the EU parliamentary elections has seemingly paid some political dividends, even though his centrist party came second. This however is seen as a welcome development by the majority of French voters who turned out in their numbers to ensure that the far-right National Rally led by populist Marine Le Pen is denied the opportunity to form the next government.
In Britain, the centre-right Labour Party led by Sir Keir Starmer won an overwhelming number of parliamentary seats in recent parliamentary elections. The Conservative Party suffered its biggest electoral defeat in decades.
These are major developments in European politics especially in the context of the war in Ukraine and the rise of nationalism in several European countries.
