– Leguan Secondary seeks to retain crown
Kaieteur Sports – Tomorrow, Friday July 5th, the second annual National Junior Golf Championship will be held at the Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue.
The National Drive, Chip & Putt Championship is a free to enter event that allows all levels of players to enter, with an opportunity to make the National Team.
The event is expected to attract an estimated 300 participants from Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10.
The competition is open to players of all skill levels and will feature three categories: Under 18, Under 15, and Under 13, for both male and female participants.
A special category for schools and teachers has been added to this year’s event.
This championship is a joint initiative by the Guyana Golf Association, Nexgen Golf Academy, Westside Golf Course, and the Ministry of Education.
It also enjoys strong support and sponsorship from the Guyana Tourism Authority, KFC, Jaigobin Hotel, Sterling Products Ltd, Guyana Beverages Inc, Jaigobin Supermarket, Toolsie Persaud Ltd, Darthan Investments Group, Tristone Auto, Dino Bissessar, Sunshine Snacks and Shangri-la Gardens.
The office of Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussain, indicated that, “The Ministry of Education granted permission to the Guyana Golf Association to host this Annual Golf Event and notified all Regional Education Heads and Head Teachers to inform teachers and students.
This is a continuation of the activities through which the Ministry of Education, via the Unit of Allied Arts, has collaborated with the Guyana Golf Association to implement golf not just at the CSEC level but to all levels of interested secondary school learners.”
Aleem Hussain, President of the GGA, attributes the rapid growth of the sport in Guyana to the successful collaboration between the Ministry of Education’s Unit of Allied Arts and the dedicated support from sponsors and supporters.
“The collaboration between the Unit of Allied Arts, Nexgen Golf Academy, and the Guyana Golf Association, which began in 2021, has led to over 600 learners taking golf as a PE elective for the CSEC examinations to date,” Hussain said.
“Additionally, PE teachers have been trained to teach golf in 8 out of 10 Regions across the country, and millions of dollars worth of equipment and balls have been distributed to various schools. This effectively aligns with the Ministry of Education’s drive to ensure that all learners leave the school system having engaged in a sport.”
Hussain extended his gratitude to the sponsors, the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Tourism Authority for their incredible support in making this second annual National Junior Golf Championship a success.
