Kaieteur Sports – Matthew Nandu, currently residing in Waterloo, Ontario Canada, will be on his home ground to represent a Canada’s Select X1 against an USA’s Select X1 for the first memorial match for former Guyana and Canada batsman Fazil Sattaur.
The action is billed for Saturday (2024-07-06) at the Laurel Creek Conservation venue things commencing from 11:00 am.
Nandu, the first-class batter, is the son of former Guyana player Arjune Nandu, who also captained Guyana at the youth level.
Arjune would have touched gloves with Sattaur both in Guyana (Berbice) and subsequently Canada.
The immensely talented batter, Matthew, has so far represented Guyana in 13 first-class matches accumulating 489 runs including a century (126). He turned out for them in 9 List A fixtures and West Indies Academy team and featured for the victorious Guyana Amazon Warriors unit in two matches at the annual Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament, in 2023.
A demonstration of the 21-year-old Matthew Nandu’s potential, he also played for West Indies at the International Cricket Council Under-19 limited-over World Cup tournament held in the Caribbean three years ago.
Described as the “young the Tiger” by legendary West Indies speedster Sir Curtly Ambrose, Matthew also bowls off-spin. Tiger was West Indies iconic batsman and Guyanese Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Matthew will be among some of Guyana ex-prominent players including Sunil Dhaniram, Clayton Lambert, Sudesh Dhaniram, Azib Alli Hanif, Faoud Bacchus, Rabindranauth Seeram, Zaheer Haniff, Keith Semple, Nyeem Baksh, Derick Kallicharran and a legion of others.
Meanwhile, Sattaur passed away last September due to illness in Brampton, Ontario, Canada at age 58. He was popularly known as the “Terminator” squarely for his pugnacious batting approach.
According to Abdool “Bird” Samad, the younger brother of Fazil, they are ‘excited’ to run off the match and he thanked all the guys for their commitment.
Samad and Fazil created history during their cricketing days in North America by being brothers to represent the national side on the International scene.
