Kaieteur News – US-based Guyanese Miss Universe Guyana hopeful, Misha Caleb is spearheading a career mentorship programme which she will provide young citizens with the information and tools they need to suitably find their career paths.
The 24-year-old who resides in Washington DC founded the non-profit Advance Guyana just about three years ago with a similar goal of reaching the youths from her community. She told The Waterfalls that Advance Guyana is dedicated to enhancing early childhood literacy across Guyana.
Caleb shared, “My nonprofit started as simple events. My mother and I would facilitate events which encourage reading among the children in our Onderneeming community (Pomeroon-Supenaam). This quickly grew to be a focus for us to emphasize the importance of early childhood literacy throughout Guyana.”
Since then, she noted that Advance Guyana has then hosted a series of literacy events for the children in the said community to engage in.
Caleb highlighted that a ‘Little Free Library’ was built in front of her residence and donation of books were made to the Nabaclis Library that facilitated story-time events for the children.
Caleb said the goal behind the nonprofit was to nurture a love for reading amongst the younger generation.
Through her next project under Advance Guyana, ‘Each One Teach One,’ Caleb hopes to see young adults in her community have accessible tools and resources needed to excel in the professional climate.
“I’m drawing from my own experiences as a Guyanese immigrant with role models and programmes that have uplifted me to be the leader I am today.”
The young woman’s passion for education and empowerment led her to first create the mentorship programme in New York.
The free, virtual initiative spans three months and equips young adults with workshops and tools while pairing them with seasoned professionals.
She told this publication, “While Guyana produces brilliant young minds through our rigorous schooling and continues to provide academic excellence nationwide; there is still a lack of opportunities for young adults. I see my programme aiding in building up the professional network within Guyana, which will in turn provide more opportunities, especially for those coming from underserved communities. My goal with Each One Teach One is to continue fostering the next generation of Guyanese leaders.”
Caleb hails from the villages of Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara and Richmond, Essequibo Coast.
Her academic journey spans from her roots in Guyana attending the Anna Regina Multilateral School and then to Howard University in the USA.
Speaking about her learning experiences, the 24-year-old noted that both schooling and academia have provided her with opportunities to grow as a leader and reach her career goals in the human resource field.
Besides her community work, Caleb aims to represent Guyana on a global stage through the Miss Guyana Universe pageant.
She expressed, “I want to showcase the richness of Guyanese culture and use this platform to empower youth in career planning.” As such her platform, ‘Because You Can,’ also aims to connect Guyanese businesses and organizations with young people, and encourages them to pursue their dreams without barriers.
As she prepares for the Miss Universe competition, Caleb remains steadfast in her mission to uplift her country and inspire its youth. Her journey reflects resilience, cultural pride, and a dedication to fostering a brighter future for Guyana.
