Dear Editor
Sometime in 1993-94, I was a taxi driver in NY. I picked up a gentleman at JFK and drove him to his hotel in Manhattan. He discovered I was Guyanese – and thereupon he began calling out several names, asking me if I knew those men. [I will not mention the names here but stand ready to disclose them to the CID]. All the names are of folks who did work for a company dredging for gold in Guyana – they are mostly head of security and lawyers.
I turned to the gentleman in the back seat, and asked, “Who might you be, a US Embassy employee?” And, he answered, in a sort of deadpan manner, “I am the guy they hired to smuggle the gold out”. He later told me he made over 50 such flights.
The GoG as well as the Guyanese people ought to know that gold companies had been smuggling much of the gold – undeclared gold – out of the country. They have been cheating the nation of millions of dollars. If you think the Nazar Mohamed story is a bombshell, my revelation here is a much bigger bombshell. Gold smuggling has been going on with impunity in Guyana – and has been for a very long time. If a CID officer or Cabinet official would like to talk to me, I would be happy to serve up full details of that pilot’s conversation.
Sincerely
Mike Persaud
