2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup…West Indies vs. Afghanistan
Kaieteur Sports – A fiery innings from the explosive Nicholas Pooran, coupled with some pinpoint bowling from Obed McCoy and company, gave the West Indies a commanding win over Afghanistan last night at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium, St. Lucia.
West Indies posted a daunting 218-5 from their allotted 120 deliveries batting under lights first.
Pooran was the main man for his team, punching a 53-ball 98, an innings which set the tone for the Caribbean team that featured six fours and a whopping 8 sixes.
Ideal support came from opener Johnson Charles, who hit 8 fours in his knock of 43 off 27 balls, reviving the innings after the departure of Brandon King (07).
Playing his first game off the bench this Cup, Shai Hope looked decent, smacking a pair of sixes during his innings of 25.
West Indies captain Rovman Powell (26) then provided some late hitting with a pair of sixes and a four during his brief stay alongside Pooran, who was sadly run out just two shy of his ton, thus effectively bringing the first innings to an end.
Afghanistan’s, who’s bowling was led by medium-pacer Gulbadin Naib (2-14), were shot down for 114 in 16.2 overs.
Windies pacer Obed McCoy was the difference-maker, picking up 3-14 as the left-arm spin pair of Akeal Hosein (2-21) and Gudakesh Motie (2-28) continued to torment batters this tournament.
Apart from a gutsy knock of 38 (5×4 1×6) from opener Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai (23), not much came from the typically explosive Afghan batting order, as the Windies moved to the top spot in their Group.
Scores: West Indies 218 for 5 (Pooran 98, Charles 43, Naib 2-14) beat Afghanistan 114 (Ibrahim 38, McCoy 3-14) by 104 runs.
