Kaieteur News – Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand on Friday turned the sod to commence the construction of the first secondary school building in Waramuri Village, Region One.
Kaieteur News reported that in May, the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office awarded the $326,598,400 contract to Trevon David Construction Services following a competitive bidding process.
The Minister Education assured residents of the government’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure and quality of education across the country.
“Two weeks ago, I told you I would be back… because we were gonna be building a secondary school here. So that is why we’re here today – to turn the sod with the contractor who is here to build the secondary school, here in Waramuri, so that you can stay and get a sound, solid secondary education. Not from your primary top– but from a secondary school with labs and all the other things you need in a secondary school,” the minister said at the ceremony.
The new secondary school is designed to accommodate up to 350 students and will feature state-of-the-art classrooms, science laboratories, a library, and sports facilities. The project aims to create an environment conducive to academic excellence and holistic development.
The construction of the Waramuri Secondary School is expected to be completed by March 2025, with the first intake of 350 students anticipated for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The Waramuri Secondary School is one of five schools being constructed in Region One; the others are the North West, Kwebanna, Matthews Ridge, and Horosoro Secondary Schools.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education reported that Minister Manickchand and her team visited communities where school projects are underway. Works were inspected at the North West Secondary School which is being reconstructed at a cost of $346M by Aruca Investments. The school is 85 percent completed.
“During her visit, Minister Manickchand observed various ongoing works, including electrical installation, terrazzo polishing, furniture assembling, plumbing, and painting. She emphasized the importance of high-quality workmanship and timely completion, noting that the quality of work executed on the project will greatly impact the lives of students,” the statement said.
It was noted that critical works for the building such as the installation of an elevator and gas pipes for the science laboratories are yet to be executed. A Chinese company has been contracted to install the elevator.
Kaieteur News understands that the school is expected to be completed by the second week of July.
The reconstruction of the North West Secondary School took place after a fire had destroyed the previous building in 2021. The new school will now feature a two-storey building with 23 classrooms, three science labs, Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) labs, a sanitary block, and an accessible lift. This modern facility aims to provide students with a conducive learning environment and support the Ministry’s goal of achieving Universal Secondary Education.
Another project, the minister visited, was the construction of Hosororo Secondary School.
According to the ministry, the site development, including road access and drainage, has been completed, and prefabricated structures for teachers’ quarters are also finished.
Also, the teaching block is currently 35 percent completed.
The new $2,619,208,261 school will have 40 classrooms across two blocks, accommodating up to 800 students and provide modern educational amenities, to support the academic growth of the students in the region.
It was highlighted by the ministry that both schools are currently being built with local workers from Hosororo and Mabaruma.
This publication reported that the ministry will be repairing and building a number of schools across the country, and was allocated $74.4 billion from the national budget to achieve this.
