Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – I write to you with a heavy heart and a mind clouded with the anguish of witnessing yet another tragedy unfold before our eyes. The recent actions of the Israeli government in Gaza have compelled me to draw parallels to one of the darkest chapters in human history – the Rwandan genocide of 1994. This comparison is not made lightly, nor is it meant to undermine the unique horrors faced by the Tutsi people during those harrowing 100 days. However, the systematic killing and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza bear chilling similarities that cannot and must not be ignored.
In 1994, the world stood by as Hutu military forces unleashed a brutal campaign against the Tutsi minority in Rwanda. Over a million lives were lost in a genocidal frenzy that left a scar on the conscience of humanity. The international community’s inaction during those days was a grave mistake, one that we vowed never to repeat. Yet here we are, decades later, witnessing the Israeli government perpetrate acts that resonate with the same harrowing notes of ethnic cleansing and systemic violence.
The Gazans, like the Tutsis, are being targeted for their very identity. They are being systematically oppressed, their homes destroyed, their families torn apart, and their lives extinguished with a ruthlessness that echoes the brutality of the Hutu militias. The Israeli government’s justification of these actions under the guise of security measures and counter-terrorism is a thin veil that fails to hide the stark reality of ethnic cleansing.
The siege of Gaza, akin to the calculated isolation of Tutsi communities, aims to break the spirit of a people, to force them into submission through sheer terror and deprivation. The bombings, the blockades, and the indiscriminate killing of civilians, including children, are not acts of self-defense; they are acts of aggression designed to eradicate a culture, a history, and a people.
As a journalist, it is my duty to speak truth to power, to call out injustice wherever it may occur. The atrocities being committed by the Israeli government in Gaza are a blight upon humanity, a testament to the perils of unchecked power and the dehumanization of the ‘other.’ We must not let history repeat itself. The international community must rise from its slumber and take decisive action to end this carnage.
In Rwanda, the world said “never again,” yet in Gaza, we find ourselves murmuring “once more.” We cannot afford the luxury of inaction. We must demand accountability, impose sanctions, and support those who are tirelessly working to bring peace and justice to the region. To fail in this is to betray the memory of the Rwandan genocide and to consign the people of Gaza to a similar fate.
Let us not be bystanders to another genocide. Let us stand together in solidarity with the Gazans, just as we should have stood with the Tutsis. Only through collective action and unwavering commitment to justice can we hope to prevent history from repeating its darkest hours.
Sincerely,
Wayne Lyttle
Journalist
