Kaieteur News – In a night of awe-inspiring talent and graceful performances, the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) held a spectacular pageant at the National Culture Centre, marking the commemoration of International Nurses Week 2024. The pageant hosted on Saturday, April 4, 2024, under the theme ‘Our Nurse, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care showcased the remarkable dedication of nurses, with nine outstanding individuals embodying the spirit of the profession.

The competition unfolded through various segments including costume, talent, evening gown, and question and answer, showcasing the diverse skills and passions of the contestants.
At the end of the event, Carolyn Benn emerged as GPHC’s Nursing Queen. She expressed gratitude to the “Esteemed pageant organizers, cherished pageant sisters, and all those who have supported me on this remarkable journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. To the organizers, your dedication and hard work have made this event possible, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to showcase my talents and represent my values on stage.”
She continued “To my fellow pageant sisters, you have been my companions, my confidantes, and my inspiration throughout this journey. Each of you brought something unique and beautiful and I am honored to have shared this experience with you.
And to all those who have supported me, whether through words of encouragement, gestures of kindness, or simply by being there for me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your belief in me has fueled my determination and given me the strength to persevere.
As I stand here today as the newly crowned, I am reminded that success is not achieved alone. It is the result of the love, support, and encouragement of those around us. So, to everyone who has played a part in my journey, thank you. I am forever grateful for your presence in my life. Thank you.”
The title of 1st runner-up was bestowed on delegate number 4, Nurse Oleah Savory, whose exceptional contributions stem from the Burns Care Unit. Her platform, “Healthy workplace, healthy nurses; investing in workplace wellness for nurse retention and satisfaction,” reflected her unwavering commitment to patient care and advocacy.
In the 2nd runner-up position was delegate number six, Nurse Tomicia Garraway, representing the Main Operating Theatre. Her platform, “Road Safety Matters; protecting nurses, and preserving patient care in the operating-theatre,” underscored her dedication to excellence and innovation in surgical care.
At the end of the event Leslyn Holder, Director of Nursing Services at GPHC, extended congratulations to the participants and contestants. “Well done everyone!!” she said.
She continued “Huge Congratulations to our New Miss GPHC Nursing, Ms Carolyn Benn, I’m in awe and extremely proud of the beauty and talent we have. More importantly the messages in the Platforms from each delegate, Wow!
It is very important for us as leaders to provide forums and opportunities for Nurses to bring these critical issues to the table for discourse and actions. Thank you all for you kind support. Thank you Nurses for your unwavering service. A Happy International Nurses Week to all of you.”
The director also lauded all nurses who participated in this year’s pageant, for showcasing their charisma, grace, elegance, strength, and professionalism. She noted that their collective efforts not only entertained but also inspired, setting a vibrant tone for the commencement of International Nurses Week at GPHC.
