Kaieteur Sports – The third year of hard work by the Guyana Golf Association and Nexgen Golf Academy has borne fruit as hundreds of students across the country, from Regions 2, 4, 5, 6, and 10 are taking golf as their PE elective at CSEC.
Rosignol, Bush Lot, Friendship, Wisburg and Anna Regina Secondary schools were joined this year by Tucville Secondary, Freeburg Secondary, Bladen Hall Multilateral Secondary, Charlestown Secondary, Abram Zuil Secondary as the numbers of students continue to increase, all with the intentions of maintaining Grade I pass rate of 90% or higher.
According to GGA president Aleem Hussain, “2021, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Head of Unit of Allied Arts Nicholas Fraser, the GGA and Nexgen Golf Academy trained 155 PE teachers in eight regions and provided equipment and balls to over 82 schools with a goal in mind of making Golf a top sport in Guyana.
“In 2022, 116 students made history by taking golf as their PE elective and since then, the sport has captured the imagination of students, teachers and parents across the country.”
With the implementation of the Five Priority Programme by Minister Priya Manickchand in 2023, golf quickly grew to reach over 22,000 learners in Grades 7-9 and with that boost, it’s expected that CSEC PE numbers will also increase in the coming years.
As seen from the photos, more than 60% of the players are female, a category that is usually difficult to promote in both golf and physical education.
It’s important to note that Belladrum Secondary also implemented a PE Golf program and were trained by the Lusignan Golf Course in preparation for their practical examination.
