Kaieteur News – A 20-year-old man who is accused of being involved in an armed robbery at Hong Yuang Supermarket, Lusignan East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arrested on Saturday and is slated to appear before a court sometime this week.
A police source confirmed that the robbery incident occurred on Friday last, between 16:52hrs and 17:00hrs on the proprietors of the Hong Yuang Supermarket. The police related that two men, one of whom was armed with a knife and the other a handgun, both reportedly wearing surgical masks with hoodies over their heads carted off a quantity of GTT cell phone cards and two Samsung cell phones belonging to the proprietors.
A 52-year-old security guard of Friendship ECD, who is attached to the Omkar Persaud Security Service, was on duty at the time of the robbery. He told ranks that at about 16:52hrs on Friday, the suspects arrived at the supermarket on a motorcycle bearing registration number CL 5553.
Both suspects reportedly came off the motorcycle and entered the supermarket and proceeded to the cashier, where they carted off with an undisclosed amount of cash and phone cards.
Police said one of the suspects relieved the proprietors of their cell phones. Thereafter, the suspects exited the supermarket and escaped the scene with the motorcycle. Notably, the area where the crime was committed was canvassed for Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, several of which were affixed to the supermarket. The CCTV footage was examined, and the footage that captured the ordeal was extracted.
Kaieteur understands that the police patrol responded promptly after the matter was reported to Vigilance Police Station. As a consequence while the patrol was proceeding west along the Lusignan Prison Road, the suspects were spotted on the motorcycle, proceeding north. Rank gave chase and the pillion rider discharged several rounds in the direction of the ranks, who returned fire in their direction.
The chase extended all the way to Felicity, Railway Embankment, where the suspects lost control of the motorcycle and fell into a nearby trench. Both suspects got up, left the motorcycle and began running and jumping several fences heading north into a busy area.
The ranks chased them further but the suspects managed to escape. The patrol party later went through the area where they (suspects) fell, and discovered one 9mm pistol, one magazine with six live matching rounds and one round in the chamber, (total seven), one Samsung cell phone, one black side bag containing a quantity of $20 bills totalling the sum of $1,240 and one knife.
At about 22:25hrs, acting on information police later arrested a 20-year-old unemployed resident of Leopold Street, Georgetown who fitted the description of one of the suspects. He was told of the allegations, cautioned, arrested, and taken to Vigilance Police Station, where he was placed into custody to assist with the investigation. Police also interviewed the security guard since the CCTV revealed that he was ‘casual’ with one of the suspects. Investigations are ongoing.
