Kaieteur News – While it is customary for Christians around the world to attend church on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of their Saviour Jesus Christ, it is a Guyanese tradition for citizens from all religious backgrounds to unite the following day (Easter Monday) for a day of family fun.
Kaieteur News visited several recreational spaces in the city on Monday, where in the usual ‘Guyanese fashion,’ families from all ethnic groups were gathered to celebrate Easter. At the National Park Thomas Lands, many parents were out with their children for a day of kite flying and picnicking. Food was bountiful, the people were friendly and the venue was filled to capacity.
Kaieteur News accompanied one family who could not find any spot to picnic at the park to the Malteenos Sports Club on Carifesta Avenue. They shared with this publication, their perspective of the holiday. They explained that Easter is a holiday, they always look forward to.
One family member gleefully exclaimed “It is a time for family!”
After chatting with a few more families at Malteenos, this publication moved on to observe the scenery at the Georgetown seawall, a popular kite flying spot in the city. However while, the kite flying activities were observed, the atmosphere at the seawalls was more party-like.
Kaieteur News made a final stop at Everest Cricket Club ground. There, families set-up tents and assisted their children with flying their kites. Some persons engaged in a game of backyard cricket while others played tag and football.
On Monday afternoon, President Irfaan Ali paid a visit to the venue. He was accompanied by his son Zayd Ali. Patrons rushed for a photo moment with the Head-of-State. The first son gifted kites to the children at that venue. President Ali engaged in some kite flying with families at Everest before leaving the venue.
