Kaieteur News – Several villages across Region Nine will soon have improved access to potable water as $116 million in contracts were awarded through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office for projects in these areas.
The projects are being executed through the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI). The NPTAB via its website revealed that in Region Nine at Katoonarib Village the improvement of water supply system project will be done by contractor Rasheid Construction to the tune of $20,931,429.
As it relate to the other projects for the Rupununi area, the installation of water supply improvement project for Potarinau Village will be done by contractor N&A Construction for $22,825,500, and at Yakarinta Village, the project will be executed by SRT Contracting and General Supplies for $25,942,892. The same contractor is set to carry out works at Fair View Village to the tune of $22,540,248.
The same project will be done in the Aishalton community by contractor 3D Construction for $23,822,900. With and number of water wells being drilled in the hinterland regions and now the water supply improved project, this publication reported that all this form part of the government’s macro plan, which is aimed at achieving 100 percent water access in riverine and hinterland communities by 2025.
Presenting this year’s budget, Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh had stated that works on the upgrade and extension of water supply systems in the hinterland were completed at Kumu, MocoMoco, Mountain Foot, Quiko and Wowetta villages, while works are progressing at Karaburi and Wallaba.
He related that at the end of 2023, hinterland water coverage stood at 82 percent compared to 46 percent at the end of 2020. The Senior official further mentioned that this year, to further improve hinterland water supply systems at areas including Baracara, Kimbia, Santa Cruz, Santa Mission, St. Ignatius, Saxacalli, Orealla, Red Hill, Wakapao, Wax Creek and Wiruni just to name a few, the government has set aside an amount of $1.5 billion for this.
