Kaieteur Sports – Despite the dry and dusty conditions of the GFC surface, the Pele FC Alumni Corporation, in association with the Pele Football Club, hosted four matches last Thursday in memory of several fallen football stars spanning over 50 years since the club’s formation.
Graced by former players who earned scholarships to Clemson University in the 1970s, current players, President of PFC Dirk Exeter, and Chairman of the National Sports Commission Kashif Muhammad, dozens of players, including females, had the opportunity to showcase their skills in four 50-minute matches.
The Pele FC U-15 team competed against Black Pearl, emerging victorious, while the female clash saw GT Kanaimas secure a comfortable win against Pakuri Jaguars, avenging their loss from the previous year. Pele FC’s Under-20 team triumphed 1-0 over Buxton Stars, while the senior match between Santos and Pele ended in favor of Santos.
All participating teams received winners’ and runner-up trophies, and individual players were also recognized with first and second-place awards.
During a brief, yet significant ceremony honoring their fallen comrades, the NSC Chairman praised the Pele FC Alumni for their initiative in recognizing the contributions of past players, whose collective efforts have sustained the club for over fifty years.
Reflecting on his own experiences competing against Pele while representing Mackenzie YMCA, Muhammad emphasized the journey of former players who started like the young athletes present, eventually earning scholarships abroad but never forgetting their roots, prioritizing giving back and empowering youth.
The Pele FC Alumni also supports numerous children with their secondary and university education pursuits.
In a special tribute, a commemorative plaque was presented to Dr. Colin Watson in memory of his elder brother and former Pele President Clyde Watson, spearheaded by Alumni Executive Eric Smith, himself a former national player.
