Kaieteur News- Children, especially toddlers, are known to create a make-believe world with the use of their imagination. Some become super-heroes wearing capes like Superman or Batman-an imagination that is almost impossible to become reality-but the “Morning Glam” DJ (disc Jockey) at 96.1 Voice FM , the “Crixmaster is an exception.
He was able transform his childhood imagination of being an entertainer on Guyana’s radio waves into reality.
Speaking with the Waterfalls earlier this week, the ‘Crixmaster’, whose real name is Jesse Newton said, “In my younger days as a child I used to listen to the Radio a lot…I remember having a radio that just played AM (frequency) and we know that AM was mostly talk more than music but when it played music or even just talk, I used to find myself imagining what if I actually did this, what if I actually talked like this”.
He was just a boy then but now age 23 and propelled by his love for music, The ‘Crixmaster’ is has been entertaining the country with his mixes on two of Guyana’s prominent radio stations, Voice FM 96.1 and 93.1 Real FM.
He has been a fulltime DJ for the last five-years and a radio DJ with for the last four years. The ‘Crixmaster’ is popularly known for his presence on the Morning Glam show hosted Natasha Waddle on Voice FM from 09:00 hrs to 12:00 hrs every Monday to Friday.
Voice FM is dubbed the Banging Station and according to The ‘Crixmaster’, the Morning Glam is his favourite.
“Morning Glam is a show of style, class. While giving you good entertainment and topics , it’s all about giving you that right start to the morning so that you can have a good vibe for the rest of day”, the ‘Crixmaster’ told the Waterfalls .
The Morning Glam is not the only radio show that the ‘Crixmaster’ has been the key ingredient of. He has been the musical flavor for a Sunday afternoon Show on Voice FM and another called Nightcap at the same radio station.
As the ‘Crixmaster’ excels in his DJ career he is now in demand not only on radio but at party events across the country. He was even recruited by The Bad Family Music- a local company-to be its official DJ at all of their events and is now part of the team.
Speaking about his role with The Bad Family the ‘Crixmaster’ said “I am tasked with the responsibility of making sure that each artistes being promoted, whether it is music being played on the radio or distributing their music with other DJs and to prep their tracks and mixes for their performances at events”.
Road to becoming a DJ
Although ‘Crixmaster’ is successful in his craft and is excelling, the road to
transforming his imagination into reality has not been without its challenges. Choosing to become an entertainer was not an easy decision to make
. He gravitated naturally to music, the arts, drama and was talented but he was not sure if he was making the right career choice that will make him money.
“I remember me and my mom were talking she wanted me do business (business stream) but my teacher would say boy you so good at this thing (entertainment). You sure want to give this up”, The ‘Crixamaster’ recalled.
He was encouraged from that day to choose what he loved and pursue his goal. To date he does regret his decision.
The name ‘Crixmaster’
After making that big step to become a DJ, one of his friends he grew-up with in Secondary school decided that The ‘Crixmaster’ will be the perfect stage name for him because of his love for Crix Biscuits.
“You see in secondary school Crix biscuits has been like the go too snack for me. I used to just pick up a pack of Crix and I could eat that with cheese, butter or jam or whatever I wanted to eat it with. My bag always had a pack of Crix and that is how I became known as Mr. Crix”, the DJ recounted.
Bettering his Craft to become the best
Now among some of the big names in Guyana’s Entertainment, ‘the ‘Crixmaster’ wants to be the best at
his craft. He goal is to become a Guyanese legend and is dedicated to bettering his skills. He is also focused on making more of his imaginations reality.
Mentoring him along the way is other local DJs that shared their knowledge with him.
“One of the names I respect is DJ ‘Tall Boss’ from Slingerz family because he was actually the first one who showed me how to DJ when I started” He said while adding, “and DJ ‘Reality’ and I also have to definitely big-up people like ‘Mixmaster Toney’ for the role they have played in making me who I am today”.
The ‘Crixmaster’ said too that Local Producer, Richie Rich is also one of his mentors. “We connected through our lover for music”, the DJ said as he advised upcoming DJs to set goals and work hard to achieve them.
“Practicing your craft”, he said, is what will make them stand out from the rest. Another secret ingredient that he learnt is to work as a professional by researching his audiences to find out their taste of music and if he is a party or playing at a “gig”, he has mastered the ability to read body languages that he can entertain them better.
