Kaieteur News – Bandits opened fire on police following a robbery at Hong Yuang Supermarket, Lusignan East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Friday.
Police stated that the armed robbery occurred between 16:52hrs and 17:00hrs, and was committed against the proprietors of the Hong Yuang Supermarket. A report issued by police related that two men, one of whom was armed with a knife and the other a handgun, both reportedly wearing surgical masks with hoodies over their heads carted off a quantity of GTT cell phone cards and two Samsung cell phones belonging to the proprietors.
A 52-year-old security guard of Friendship ECD, who is attached to the Omkar Persaud Security Service, and was on duty at the time of the robbery, told ranks that at about 16:52hrs on Friday, the suspects arrived at the supermarket on a motorcycle bearing registration number CL 5553. Both suspects reportedly came off the motorcycle and entered the supermarket and proceeded to the cashier area where they took an undisclosed amount of cash and phone cards.
Police said one of the suspects relieved the proprietors of their cell phones. Thereafter, the suspects exited the supermarket and escaped the scene with the motorcycle. Notably, the area where the crime was committed was canvassed for Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, and several were seen affixed to the supermarket. Those CCTV footages were examined, and the footage that captured the ordeal was extracted. Following that, around 16:59hrs, someone called the Vigilance Police Station and reported the matter.
As a result, a police patrol responded quickly, and while proceeding west along the Lusignan Prison Road, ECD, the suspects were spotted on the motorcycle, proceeding north on a red motorcycle. Ranks then gave chase, and while in pursuit, the pillion rider discharged several rounds in the direction of the ranks, who returned fire in their direction.
During the chase which extended all the way to Felicity, Railway Embankment ECD the suspects lost control of the motorcycle and fell into a nearby trench. Both suspects got up, left the motorcycle and began running and jumping several fences heading north into a busy area. The ranks gave chase behind them but the suspects managed to escape. After ranks went through the area where they (suspects) fell, one 9mm pistol, one magazine with six live matching rounds and one round in the chamber, (total seven), one Samsung cell phone, one black side bag containing a quantity of $20 bills totaling the sum of $1,240 and one knife were found on the ground about one foot away from the motorcycle. At about 22:25hrs, acting on information received, police arrested a 20-year-old unemployed resident of Leopold Street, Georgetown who fitted the description of one of the suspects. He was told of the allegations, cautioned, arrested, and taken to Vigilance Police Station, where he was placed into custody to assist with the investigation. Police also interviewed the security guard since the CCTV revealed that he was ‘casual’ with one of the suspects. Investigations are ongoing.
