Kaieteur Sports – A Guyana Masters Over-45 men’s hockey team left the shores of Guyana for Nottingham, England, where they will be participating in the Masters Indoor Hockey World Cup scheduled for 28 March to 1 April 2024. This is the first time ever that Guyana will be making an appearance at a world level tournament.
This event is the largest ever, with 42 men’s teams and 33 women’s teams in divisions running in 5-year groups from Over-35 right through to over-60. The tournament is scheduled for the David Ross Sports Village on the University of Nottingham Campus.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Men’s team will find themselves in the prestigious company of teams from host country England, Australia, France, Germany, Bangladesh, Canada and Wales. There will be two pools of 4 teams each and Guyana has been included in Pool B with England, Canada and Wales. The schedule sees Guyana facing Canada in its opening match today (Thursday 28th March) at 0600 hrs Guyana time. The lone South American side then takes on England the following morning and completed the pool round against Wales on Saturday 30th.
Guyana has selected a solid contingent with its 12 man team featuring no less than four former national captains in Ian Nicholson, Alan Fernandes, Philip Fernandes and Devin Munroe.
The full squad is as follows: Jerazeno Bell (Captain), Gregory Garraway (Goalkeeper), Azad DeAbreu (Goalkeeper), Dwayne Scott, Chris Low-Koan, Marc King, Devin Munroe, Alan Fernandes, Devin Hooper, Ivor Thompson, Ian Nicholson and Philip Fernandes. Allan Newark will serve as Team Manager while Jonathan Roberts will act in the capacity of Team coach.
Notably, Nicholson, the oldest of the group assumed the captaincy of the Guyana National team, back in the late eighties and held the position for several years before migrating to the USA. While there are three more overseas based players selected, in Marc King (Canada), Captain Jerazeno Bell (Jamaica) and goalkeeper Gregory Garraway (Trinidad), the rest of the team are all based in the homeland of Guyana.
Locally-based players, goalkeeper Azad DeAbreu, Devin Hooper, Chris Low-Koan, Ivor Thompson, Devin Munroe, Dwayne Scott and the Fernandes brothers round out the selection. All twelve players have represented our nation during the prime of their career which is testament to the quality of the side.
The team will be coached by Canadian International, Jonathan Roberts, who is the son of the late Cecil ‘Skip’ Roberts, a former hockey stalwart and captain of Guyana. The rest of the team Management comprises of Assistant Manager, Jeremy Roberts and Assistant Coach George Melville.
