Kaieteur Sports – Elton Dharry and Dexter Marques are set to ignite the ring with explosive action on April 20 at the Everest Cricket Ground, as they vie for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Flyweight Gold Title.
The bout marks the second showdown between the two pugilists, with Dharry claiming victory in their initial encounter back in 2011 via a seventh-round Technical Knockout at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Tensions ran high as both fighters exchanged bold declarations of triumph, briefly sparking heated exchanges before officials intervened to separate them.
“This isn’t 2011,” Marques asserted during the press conference held at the Everest Ground yesterday, highlighting the evolution of both fighters since their first encounter.
Dharry made it unequivocal that he is the superior boxer, pledging to step out of the ring on April 20 with an enhanced record.
Since his professional debut in 2007, Marques has stepped into the ring 21 times, amassing a commendable record of 18 victories and three losses.
His most recent win was against Colombian fighter Luis Carrillo, while his last defeat came at the hands of Panamanian Gilberto Pedroza.
As for Dharry, the current holder of the WBC International Super Flyweight title, boasts a notable record of 27 wins, six losses, and a draw.
Dharry has maintained an undefeated streak since his controversial 2019 bout against Australian Andrew Moloney, where he was forced to retire hurt in the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round fight for the Interim WBA Super Flyweight World title.
In another highly anticipated match, world-rated amateur boxer Keevin Allicock has punched his way into the professional arena for the first time against Barbados’ Gardel Roberts.
Despite Roberts’ record of just one win in 11 outings, Allicock made it clear that he is not underestimating his opponent as he aims to establish his dominance in the professional ranks.
Laured Stewart, initially slated to face Jermaine King who withdrew from the card, will now take on Imran Khan in a six-round bout, promising an exciting showdown for fans.
Stephan Da Silva is set to make his comeback to the ring following his 2022 victory over Fiji’s William Mel in Sydney, Australia, where he claimed the prestigious World Boxing League (WBL) Junior Lightweight Title.
Da Silva’s opponent for this highly anticipated bout is Barbados’ Ricardo Blackman Jr, who has yet to secure a victory in his professional career, having lost all nine of his previous fights.
In another match-up, Edmond DeClou will make his return to the ring against Charwin Estwick in a six-round contest.
DeClou, boasting a record of 17 wins and four losses, last entered the ring in 2018 against Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings, where he suffered a TKO defeat in the sixth round.
Peter Abdool, President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), expressed gratitude to Dharry Promotion, Bristol’s Promotion, and the Guyana Television Network for organizing the event.
Abdool also hinted at additional fights being added to the card and urged boxing enthusiasts to show their support for the sport.
