Putting in the work! Laured Stewart in preparation mode for his April 20 card at the Everest Ground.
Kaieteur Sports – Despite his opponent, Jermaine King, pulling out at the last minute, Laured Stewart remains focused on whoever is placed in his path to the International Boxing Council’s (IBC) International Cruiserweight belt.
Nicknamed “Pastor,” the US-based Guyanese boxer will feature as an undercard on the Elton Dharry vs Dexter Marques bout for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Gold World Super Flyweight title on April 20 at the Everest Ground.
“The way I see it, Jermaine is scared of me, as he should be, after all, the Lion is Hungry… Winning this fight is crucial to me since achieving a championship as a professional boxer has always been a childhood dream of mine,” Stewart expressed to Kaieteur News yesterday.
Stewart, who debuted with a Unanimous Decision victory over Anson Green at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, has encountered just one loss in four outings.
His only setback was a Majority Decision defeat to the USA’s Jalen Renaud.
“I also understand that clinching this belt will propel me into discussions for competing for one of the more prestigious international titles in the future, possibly the IBF or IBO,” Stewart observed.
He regards his upcoming fight on April 20 as a positive step forward, adding, “A victory here significantly broadens the horizon of opportunities.”
The man of faith stated, “I’m calling on the public and every member of the Body of Christ to join me on the night of the 20th at the Everest Cricket Club to help cheer me on as I pursue the realization of a childhood dream.”
Dharry, the WBC International Super Fly champion, boasts a ring record of 27 wins and six losses.
His closest opportunity to a world title came against Australian Andrew Moloney, but his WBA Interim World Super Flyweight bout ended controversially when the fight was stopped in the ninth round by the ring doctor due to a severe cut over his eye.
On the other hand, Marques will face Dharry for the second time, aiming to avenge his knockout defeat from 2009.
With a record of 18 wins and three losses, one of which was inflicted by Dharry, boxing fans can anticipate an exciting showdown on April 20 when these two super flyweights collide.
The Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) will host a press conference today to unveil additional details about the card.
